The Boston Red Sox just finished a 10 game homestead with a 5-5 record. After the homestand, the Red Sox find themselves with a 14-9 record and a first place appearance in the American League East standings. Now, they find themselves going on the road to take on the New York Mets. It’ll be a quick series, a two game miniseries happening on Tuesday and Wednesday. But before we start watching come Tuesday night, let’s dive into the series a bit and give a prediction.
Dealing with Jacob deGrom
At this point, I’d rather do just about anything than have to face Jacob deGrom. deGrom is is having himself another Cy Young caliber year so far. He’s 2-1 with a 0.31 ERA along with 50 strikeouts. Jacob deGrom is one of the best, if not THE best, pitcher in the MLB. The Red Sox lineup has done well against aces this year so far such as Tyler Glasnow, Lucas Giolito, and Hyun-Jin Ryu. But can they deal with a guy that might be on a whole other level? I really don’t know. The Red Sox have a good offense. But this will be a really big test for this lineup.
Richards and Pivetta
Garrett Richards takes the ball on Tuesday night with Nick Pivetta going the following day. With Richards, it’s all about avoiding the one bad inning. Fans (including myself) think that he stinks based on the box score and final pitching line. But it’s his control that drives me and Red Sox nation insane. No command of the fastball. That needs to be sharp from the first pitch on Tuesday night.
Pivetta just came off a one hit performance against Seattle. I hate to say it, but Pivetta is due for a bad start. I think this is the start that it happens. Hopefully I’m wrong. As long as Pivetta limits the walks, his stuff is really, really good against any lineup he faces.
Tuesday night: Red Sox 7 Mets 5. Wednesday night: Red Sox 1 Mets 4. A split seems realistic and feasible with the pitching matchups.
A two game sweep somehow could happen. But a LOT would have to go right. A split would be a great result, considering the Red Sox are kings of the split lately. It should be a fun and entertaining series. Sit back and enjoy it all folks!
