Red Sox Game 1 Spring Training Observations
The Boston Red Sox are back playing baseball games! There are some things to be excited about this season. Alex Cora is back in the fold. The Red Sox made some signings this off-season that may not have been the prettiest, but effective nonetheless.
The Red Sox opened up their Spring Training schedule against the Minnesota Twins. Although they came away with a 7-6 loss, there is still a lot to take a look at.
The Youth Movement at the Plate

Bobby Dalbec showed off the power with a solo homerun. Jeter Downs also hit a homerun in this one. Connor Wong also had a double and played well behind the plate. The Red Sox put up 6 runs on 11 hits. Keep in mind, this was only in seven innings of baseball. Just for good measure, Yairo Munoz also had two hits and an RBI on the day for good measure. There is some young talent that could definitely be a help to this 2021 Red Sox team.
The Pitching…Meh
Nathan Eovaldi started the Spring Training opener and only went 1.1 innings, giving up two runs, two hits, one walk, and two strikeouts. While the strikeouts and MPH were impressive, the control at times was highly suspect. After that, the Red Sox brought in someone named Caleb Simpson. He went on to give up three runs in 0.2 innings pitched. Yeah, no thanks! We don’t need a repeat of 2020. The rest of the pitching staff did fine. One earned run in the next five innings is an encouraging sign. Do I recognize any of those other names? Nope! But that’s usually how it goes with the first week of Spring Training games.
In Conclusion
Nothing crazy to report after game one. There were some homers, some promising signs, and some things to work on. Don’t hit the panic button yet Red Sox fans. We haven’t even started March Spring Training games yet!
