QB Review Week 6
With all but one game left in week 6, it’s time to look at some of the most notable QB performances of the weekend.
Daniel Jones (15/31, 161yds, 1 TD, 3 INT’s)
Going into Foxboro as a rookie quarterback has never really been a good thing in the last few decades. So because of that, there were not a lot of expectations for Daniel Jones going into Thursday night’s game. However, in the first half, he kept the Giant’s afloat. His one touchdown pass to Golden Tate was an amazing look and made it look like the Giant’s had life heading into half time. Unfortunately, no one does half time adjustments like Bill Belichick and the New York offense fell flat in the second half. But if Jones can make things happen like the Tate touchdown going forward, he will most likely only improve going forward.
Tom Brady (31/41, 334yds, 2 Rushing TD’s, 1 INT)
With limited offensive weapons and a few rookies that he clearly hasn’t gotten used to throwing to yet, Tom Brady had some issues on Thursday. The offense looked scrambled and disorganized in the first half of the game but seemed to at least somewhat get themselves together after halftime. The real standout plays from Brady this week were his two QB sneak touchdowns. After passing Peyton Manning on the all time passing yards chart and becoming second to Drew Brees, apparently Brady decided to turn his attention to padding his rushing stats.
Jimmy Garoppolo (24/33, 243yds, 1 Rushing TD, 1 INT)
I would bet good money that no one was expecting the 49ers to start their season 5-0. Especially after week 1 were they seemingly barely won the game against Tampa Bay. But as the weeks have passed, they have established themselves as the best team in the NFC. But I hate to break it to all of you Jimmy G fans who believe that he’s the second coming of Tom Brady (myself included), he’s not what makes this team so good. While he’d been slowly improving over the weeks and getting comfortable on the field again after his injury last season, the defense is what’s really carrying this team. However, I would look out for their quarterback to get better and better as the season goes on.
Sam Darnold (23/32, 338yds, 2 TD’s, 1 INT)
Welcome Back Sammy D! After missing the last few weeks of the season because he had Mono, Sam Darnold made sure the Cowboys knew that his Jets were not going to just be walked over. In a game that Dallas desperately needed to win to get themselves back on track, Darnold gave his offense enough power to make sure that did not happen. While I can’t say that he will continue to surge next week against New England’s number 1 defense, Darnold may have just given the Jet’s a little bit of hope for their season moving forward. That is if he continues to play this way.
Baker Mayfield (22/37, 249yds, 1 TD, 1 Rushing TD, 3 INT’s)
Though Mayfield had a better game that he did last week against the 49ers, he still could not lead his team to a win this week. To his credit, the Seahawks are a good team being lead by a quarterback who could end up being the MVP of the league this year. But they needed this win. This team began the season with most people thinking they would be one of the best teams in the AFC and is now 2-4 heading into their bye week. Baker has got to figure this stuff out and become a leader for his team instead of worrying about what people are saying about him in the press. Or soon he’ll become only known for the State Farm commercials.
Deshaun Watson (30/42, 280yds, 1 TD, 1 INT)
Watson cooled down a bit this week after throwing for more than 400 yards last week against the Falcons but still had a great game against the Chiefs. But the numbers don’t tell the whole story with Watson this week. It says a lot about Watson’s ability and leadership skills that he was able to take his team to a win in Kansas City with the Chiefs coming off a tough loss. You knew Mahomes and his team would fit tough for a win but Watson kept his composure and sent the Chiefs on a two game losing streak. It’s time to begin seeing the Texans as a legitimate contender in the AFC.
Honorable Mention: Devlin Hodges (15/20, 132yds, 1 TD, 1INT)
After being placed in concussion protocol last week, Steeler’s back up QB Mason Rudolph needed a back up himself. Enter undrafted rookie Devlin ‘Duck’ Hodges. While Hodges didn’t have an amazing break out game, he still did his part in helping the Steelers get their second win of the season. For a guy who’s previous best accomplishment was being the best duck caller in Alabama, I think he had a pretty good night.
