Owen Power or Matthew Beniers?

The 2021 NHL Draft is less than a month away and the Buffalo Sabres hold the first overall pick. It begs the question, who will the Sabres select first overall? There really isn’t a consensus number one overall pick like there was the last few years but there are two players who I think could possibly go first overall. Defenseman Owen Power and forward Matthew Beniers are projected to be top three picks in the draft but which one will be selected by the Sabres? In this article, I’m going to give you my selection but first, let’s break down their stats.

Owen Power

Owen Power - 2021 NHL Entry Draft Prospect Profile

I’ll be talking about Power first. The defenseman from the University of Michigan is 6’5″ and weighs 214 pounds. Looking at his stats, he played in 26 games with the University of Michigan, recording 3 goals and 13 assists. However, his stats from the year before caught my eye. With the Chicago Steel of the USHL, he scored 12 goals and registered 28 assists in 45 games played. For a defenseman, getting that many goals is pretty good.

Matthew Beniers

Matthew Beniers - 2021 NHL Draft Prospect Profile

Sticking with the University of Michigan, forward Matthew Beniers is my other name to watch. He’s 6’1″ and weighs 174 pounds. During the college hockey season, he scored 10 goals and registered 14 assists in 24 games played. He was playing in the World Championships in Latvia for Team USA but he unfortunately suffered an injury and couldn’t play for the rest of the tournament. He doesn’t have bad numbers for a young player, so it will be interesting to see what the Sabres do.

My Prediction

I know there a couple of other prospects in play but in my opinion, I think the Sabres will select Power. They need to stock up on defensemen, especially since they took forwards in the last couple of drafts. It looks like Power will be returning to school and that is okay. Assuming Buffalo selects him, I want him to develop and not being thrown into the fire. We’ll see what draft day brings up but don’t be surprised if Buffalo drafts both Power and Beniers. They will need to make a trade for that to happen and Jack Eichel could be part of it. So Owen Power or Matthew Beniers? Stay tuned.
