Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds gets first All-Star nod

So far this season, Bryan Reynolds has flown under the radar. That was not the case on Tuesday afternoon, as Reynolds was selected to his first career All-Star game. The former top prospect has had a stellar first half and been one of the Pirates’ few consistent pieces. In his third MLB season, Reynolds is living up to expectations.

In 80 games this season, Reynolds is hitting .306 with 46 RBI’s. The Baltimore native has also hit 15 home runs which are one short of his career-high. Although the Pirates have struggled to score runs, Reynolds has been an extra- bases machine. He also has 21 doubles this season which is the second most among MLB outfielders.

Additionally, Reynolds was third in WAR ( 3.2) among MLB Outfielders entering play on Sunday. In the first half of the season, Reynolds has shown why he is a vital part of the Pirates future. Although Reynolds will be a reserve, it the second straight All-Star Game that the Pirates will have two representatives. It is also the first since 2014 that the Pirates will send two position players.

For Reynolds, it is a special accomplishment in what has been an impressive first half. Entering play on July 4th, he had the fifth-highest average in the NL. He has been a dynamic bat in the heart of a Pittsburgh lineup that has rarely been at full strength. Over the last thirty days, he has been one of the hottest batters in baseball and posted a .336 average.

In the field, Reynolds has been equally impressive. The twenty-six-year-old has only committed two errors this season. He also already has two outfield assists which are already half of his total from last year. In all aspects of the game, Reynolds is making a difference.

As Reynolds prepares for All-Star weekend, he can cross off one of his main goals for this season. While the Pirates have a 30-53 record, having two All-Stars is a positive sign. The Pirates hope it is the first of many for their young outfielder who is key to their future.

In eight days, Reynolds will get to show the baseball world just how bright his future is alongside his teammate Adam Frazier.
