Patriots v.s. Jets Preview
Another year, another trip to the Meadowlands. This time we don’t even get to see the new future of gang green in Sam Darnold, as he is out with an injury. So Josh McCown will start. There are a lot of questionables for the Patriots coming into this game. Brady and Gronk both have the designation. Will they play? Gronk says he will, and Brady is very unlikely to miss a game almost ever, but its been a weird season.
The Jets have not had a good defense all year, and this offense should be able to get back on track in this one. Brady needs to start spreading the ball around more. This whole James White and Edelman constantly is getting predictable, and Josh Gordon does not need 12 targets. Chris Hogan has proved he can do it in the past, why has he been on a milk carton? And Phillip Dorsett was good with Edelman out, he needs to be incorporated much more. That used to be the beauty of the Pats offense, they used to spread the ball and nobody could guess who would get the ball next. Now its getting predictable and too simple. Sony Michel coming back to full health will be a key for the season going forward as well. At 41, it’s clear that Brady needs a steady run game behind him to be effective, and that’s not going to happen with Cordarrelle Patterson back there. Hopefully Rex Burkhead will actually be back this week as well to aid in the run game, but with his luck he’ll fall down an elevator shaft an hour before the game.
The Jets offense isn’t anything crazy to figure out either. They just need to avoid letting Josh McCown look like Peyton Manning like they’ve let other scrubs do (like Blake Bortles). Otherwise there are no skill players that should give the Pats trouble. Enunwa has in the past but if Gilmore is on him he should be ineffective. Robby Anderson is fast, but so is Jonathan Jones. Otherwise they could get killed by running backs and tight ends in the passing game like they have against other teams. Elijah McGuire is solid, and Chris Herndon has been a bit of a breakout player here and there. The quiet guys like that are the ones that always show out against the Pats. This defensive unit needs to come back like a completely new team off the bye week for this team to be successful going forward.
This seems like a game with some mystery behind it going into it, so let’s just hope Hoyer is ready to go. I can’t see the Pats losing this one, even on the road and banged up. 31-21 Pats.
