Patriots: Tom Brady’s return to Gillette was everything we all needed
New England Patriots fans were given a treat last week when Tom Brady returned home for the first time. Having Brady back in Gillette was a sense of closure for the fans, organization, and most likely Brady. After the way things were occurring before Brady’s exit, we didn’t know how people would perceive his return. However, it’s safe to say that the fans got exactly what they wanted and needed from this highly anticipated game.
I’m going to throw this out there and say that Brady needed this reunion as much as the fans did. For a while, it seemed as if the fans wrote Brady off as if he was just any ordinary player. And it seemed as if Brady did the same to all of the Patriots fans in New England. However, Brady is not an ordinary player and the Patriots fans are not just another group of fans. There’s way too much history and respect between the two for it to be that way.
The Arrival
As Brady walked through Gillette from a different direction, you could immediately see the welcoming look of appreciation from him. Brady smiled and showed respect to all of the Patriots staff who were standing along the sides for his entrance. Before an embrace with Robert Kraft, Brady shared a moment with Stacey James, VP of Public Relations for the Patriots.
This highly anticipated game was none like any other regular season game that will be played this season. There’s many storylines that arose from this game, but none bigger than the mentor vs the mentee. For the first time in their legendary careers, Brady and Bill Belichick had to prepare for battle against each other.
First Time On The Field
Gillette Stadium filled up quickly and early for the return of the franchise’s all-time leader. Eventually, Brady made his way onto the field for his warm up routine. However, he did make sure to run the length of the field when he came out for the first time. Brady gave his iconic “LETS GO” to the New England diehards who have supported him for his entire career.
The fans in attendance were lucky to have seen a video tribute the Patriots prepared for Brady. Just after it ended, Brady and the Buccaneers came onto the field to the entire stadium chanting “BRADY, BRADY!” This was a new and different moment that we haven’t seen in Gillette Stadium before. We’ve never had to cheer for the return of Brady.
The Game
Again, this was set up to be a memorable game for Brady and the Patriots. Entering the game, Brady only needed 68 more passing yards to break the record and become the NFL’s passing leader. The record breaking pass happened early in the game and with five minutes left in the first quarter. As it was happening, Drew Brees was shown clapping along the sidelines. After all, it was his record that Brady was breaking.
At the request of Brady, the Patriots didn’t do too much to honor him after breaking the record. Brady didn’t want to pause the game, so instead the Pats congratulated him on their jumbotrons. It was a special moment for all, as Brady broke the record on the field where he began.
At the end of the game, Brady and Belichick shared a quick hug at midfield. The two said “good game” to each other and then Brady hugged his former offensive coordinator, Josh McDaniels. According to reports, Belichick went into the Buccaneers locker room and talked with Brady for 20 minutes or so.
We’ll probably never know what the two legends talked about. However, for the true Patriots fans. it’s great to see Belichick and Brady still have their connection, even if the media portrays otherwise.
