One Positive and One Negative For Every MLB Team

Opening Day is just two days away, and all seems right in the world (well, you know, outside of the global pandemic). To celebrate the excitement in the air in the world of baseball, this article will be focused on saying one positive (and one negative) thing about every MLB team. Here. We. Go!

Arizona Diamondbacks

Positive:

The stars have aligned (in the form of removing the universal DH) for a chance to see some more MadBum bombs in 2021.

Negative:

You’re in a division headlined by two of the best teams in baseball. Get ready for a lot of losses at the hands of the Dodgers and Padres.

Atlanta Braves

Positive:

The pitching staff will be healthy this year! As much as rookies Kyle Wright, Bryse Wilson, and Ian Anderson performed last year (especially in the playoffs), Having Make Soroka back later in April as well as new additions Charlie Morton and Drew Smyly should make starting pitching a strength going forward.

Negative:

While the starting pitching has been solidified, they need to find a stud bullpen arm. I don’t see a strong closer/high leverage candidate on this team.

Baltimore Orioles

Positive:

Trey Mancini is back! That should be a great feel-good story for your fans to rally behind.

Negative:

The team just isn’t very good. If Matt Harvey is your #2 starter, you’re in for a rough season.

Boston Red Sox

Positive:

Bobby Dalbec hit 7 home runs in 45 at bats this spring training! That’s a pace of 62 HR in 400 AB, which is a AB threshold he should hit this year. And he’ll be hitting in the bottom third of the order.

Negative:

He also had 19 strikeouts, which would make 168 SO over 400 AB. Yikes.

Chicago Cubs

Positive:

Javy Baez should have a bounceback year after hitting just .203 in 2020. He’s too talented to not get that back to at least .260.

Negative:

What’s the plan with Kris Bryant? How does he feel about being in so many trade rumors? There’s a lot of question marks for this team moving forward.

Chicago White Sox

Positive:

It’s always Tim Anderson bat flips. But seriously:

Negative:

Eloy Jimenez’ recent injury will sideline him for a while.

Cincinnati Reds

Positive:

Joey Votto might be ready to go for Opening Day!

Negative:

I really don’t want to see Votto retire, but I also don’t want him playing like a shell of his former self. Last year wasn’t great, and I’m not sure this one will be much better.

Cleveland Indians

Positive:

Eddie Rosario was a underrated pickup for this team. He should provide some strong all-around play in the outfield and at the plate.

Negative:

They finally traded Francisco Lindor, which means it’s clear this team is not looking to compete in the near future. Expect to see Jose Ramirez and possible Shane Bieber on the trade block come midseason.

Colorado Rockies

Positive:

Trevor Story is a top 5 shortstop right now, at least. Probably top 3.

Negative:

They got relatively nothing for Nolan Arenado, and they won’t be good at all this season. Who knows what direction this team is going in.

Detroit Tigers

Positive:

Casey Mize is expected to start the season in the MLB, and I’m really curious to see how he does.

Negative:

You’re not going to make a lot of noise at all this year. But you knew that already.

Houston Astros

Positive:

Most of your team had a bad year in 2020, so there’s nowhere to go but up!

Negative:

Everyone still remembers the trashcans. You’re not safe.

Kansas City Royals

Positive:

Signing Mike Minor might end up as a very good move. He’s been very up-and-down the last few seasons, so hopefully this one will be more “up.”

Negative:

The team has some good pieces, but I don’t think they have enough strengths to make it anywhere important this year.

Los Angeles Angels

Positive:

Mike Trout.

Negative:

The Angels somehow always underperform no matter how good their roster is.

Los Angeles Dodgers

Positive:

On paper, the Dodgers have the best roster in the MLB. Bar none.

Negative:

Bauer’s given up 6 home runs this ST, so should be a little concerning. Also, the whole pine tar situation

Miami Marlins

Positive:

Top Prospect Jazz Chisholm will start at 2nd base on Opening Day!

Negative:

2020 was a magical year for the Marlins that saw them sneak into the playoffs. I don’t see a repeat in 2021.

Miluwakee Brewers

Positive:

The Brewers made some really intriguing moves this offseason that upgraded this team in many areas.

Negative:

Keston Huira’s move to 1st has me a little scared. I admittedly haven’t watched the Brewers ST, but can he make the transition without a confidence hit?

Minnesota Twins

Positive:

Nelson Cruz might not be able to meet David Ortiz’s stats at 40, but he should get pretty darn close.

Negative:

I’m just not super high on the pitching depth of this team. We’ll see if they prove me wrong

New York Mets

Positive:

The trade for Francisco Lindor shows this team is in win-now and win-later mode. They’re in a solid position to be a top team for the next few years.

Negative:

I’m very concerned about what Noah Syndergaard will look like when he comes back midseason. He didn’t look particularly good in 2019 before his Tommy John surgery. Perhaps I’m just projecting my fears of Chris Sale onto him, too.

New York Yankees

Positive:

Like the Dodgers, this is the best team in the AL (on paper).

Negative:

The injury bug has been particularly partial to the Yankees over the last three or so seasons. Can Giancarlo Stanton and Aaron Judge, in particular, stay healthy?

Oakland Athletics

Positive:

Like the Astros, this team is coming back healthy this year! Matt Chapman looks to be ready for the season.

Negative:

The Athletics are not in a very strong position to challenge for a playoff spot, although it is possible. Will we see some trades if they’re not where they want to be by the All Star Break?

Philadelphia Phillies

Positive:

Didi Gregorius was a steal for the team last year, and he should be able to build on that in 2021.

Negative:

Like the Angels, this team just continues to underperform. With the strength of the Mets and Braves, I think that will continue.

Pittsburgh Pirates

Positive:

I can’t wait for a full season of Ke’Bryan Hayes!

Negative:

That’s about all there is to look forward to for the Pirates.

San Diego Padres

Positive:

You’re the second best team in the NL!

Negative:

You’re also the second best team in your division.

San Francisco Giants

Positive:

I do think this team is a little better than people give them credit for.

Negative:

This is one of the older teams in the MLB. There isn’t a lot of upside in the current roster.

Seattle Mariners

Positive:

The Mariners have one of the youngest rosters in league, so there’s a lot to be curious about. Who will breakout?

Negative:

I’m not a huge fan of the pitching staff of this team. None of them really inspire much confidence.

St. Louis Cardinals

Positive:

Trading for Nolan Arenado prevented this team from regressing into a rebuild. They’ll stay competitive for years to come.

Negative:

Yadi Molina is a future HoF, but what will he look like this year? He’ll turn 39 during the season, and at catcher that’s ancient.

Tampa Bay Rays

Positive:

All eyes are on Randy Arozarena this year. After last year’s playoff run, he’s the favorite to win AL Rookie of the Year.

Negative:

Losing Morton and trading away Blake Snell is a big hit for this team. They did not get serviceable enough replacements, either.

Texas Rangers

Positive:

You get to enjoy a year of Brock Holt!

Negative:

This team has almost no strengths. Get ready for a tough year.

Toronto Blue Jays

Positive:

This team is making a push this year for the playoffs. Adding Marcus Semien and George Springer shows that.

Negative:

I don’t understand why the Jays decided to not resign Taijuan Walker. They need some starting pitching, and he’s young with upside.

Washington Nationals

Positive:

Jon Lester’s overall stats last year are misleading. He had one bad game and pitched really well the rest of the year. I think the Nats will see more of the latter this year.

Negative:

I don’t know what to make of this roster. Will they be good or bad? They have good players in some areas and bad players in others. Can they form a cohesive team?

Hope this gets you as excited as it got me for the season! Can’t wait to see what happens!
