2020 has inevitably stunk so far. Kobe Bryant is gone, RIP. The coronavirus is sweeping the nation and has effectively taken out sports. The Patriots got bounced in the first round of the playoffs. Mookie Betts is gone. It’s been one bad event after another. But last night, the Patriots did something that will hopefully be the turning point in 2020. No, it wasn’t resigning Tom Brady (yet?). It was resigning Pro Bowl Special Teams player Matthew Slater.
The Patriots & special teamer/WR Matthew Slater have agreed to a two-year extension, per sources. The deal is similar to his last, which averaged $2.6M/year.
Slater, a longtime team captain, is one of the team’s most respected players & arguably the top ST player in the league.

To answer your question Matt, I’m feeling better now that you’re back in the fold. Everyone else should be happy to have Slater back in the fold as well for several reasons.

Bill Belichick talks about it all of the time. You win football games when you control all three phases of the game. People forget how big special teams can be in any given game. Matthew Slater has proven you can be a Pro Bowler by not being on offense or defense. He’s an eight time Pro-Bowl selection along with getting two First-Team All-Pro nods as well. The man has a knack for getting to the football and making life hard for opposing teams. That’s your biggest piece back on the special teams.
Field Yates says it in the tweet above. He’s been a Patriots captain for a long time. He has also been dubbed as one of the most respected players on the Patriots and in the NFL. Not to mention, he’s an amazing person off of the field.

I could literally flood this page with Matthew Slater awards. But, you get the point. Slater is a pro’s pro on the field and off of the field. He embodies what it truly means to be a New England Patriot.

These NEVER get old. The way Matthew Slater breaks it down after Patriots wins is second to none. The heart, passion, and energy he puts into his speeches are unbelievable to say the least. Nobody could possibly replace Slater when doing those speeches. Plus, if a certain quarterback were to leave New England, they’d need Slater’s leadership more than ever. I’m looking forward to more of these videos with Slater in the middle of it, in the near future.
I’m ecstatic to have Matthew Slater back. He’s a great player and even better man. The Pro Bowl special teams player deserves to be a Patriot for life. Now it’s time to bring the rest of the crew back. Also, bring in some reinforcements, get your prized QB back, and run it back for a trip to Tampa Bay in February.
