The NHL trade deadline has come and gone, and there were plenty of trades so let’s take a look at some of the winners of this deadline.
New York Rangers: Big time winners
It was no surprise that the Rangers were sellers at the deadline. The Rangers have given up on the rest of this season and started their rebuild now. They blew up the team trading Rick Nash, Michael Grabner, Nick Holden, Ryan McDonough, and J.T Miller.
What they got in return was huge though: 25-year-old Forward Vladislav Namestnikov, 26-year-old Center Ryan Spooner, 20-year-old Defenseman Libor Hajek; 20-year-old Defenseman Yegor Rykov; 20-year-old Defenseman Ryan Lindgren; 19-year-old Center Brett Howden; 24-year-old AHL prospect Rob O’Gara; the Tampa Bay Lightning’s 2018 first-round pick; the Lightning’s 2019 second-round pick, which becomes a first if they win the Stanley Cup in the next two seasons; the Boston Bruins’ 2018 first-round pick; the New Jersey Devils’ 2018 second-round pick; a 2018 third-round pick from Boston; and a 2019 seventh-round pick from the Bruins.
That’s a huge return for a team that is trying to rebuild. Obviously this time next year all of this could end up looking horrible depending on how these young players turn out, and also who they end up drafting. Right now this is looking good for the Rangers to try and get out of a rebuild as quick as possible.
New Jersey Devils: Small time winners
The Devils were a team that we looked at before the season started and didn’t think they would be in the playoff picture. They have played decently well and they have the top wild card spot currently. They added Patrick Maroon, and Michael Grabner. These wingers have good speed and goal scoring ability and they didn’t give up much, only a second rounder, a third rounder, and a pair of prospects. The Devils could even potentially knock the Pens back into a wild card position, they have a game in hand and are only 4 points behind.
Winnipeg Jets: #yousilly winners
The Jets have been the team this year that have been so fun to watch. They are a young team and have been a fun story to watch unfold. They have been playing very well and are starting to get hot at the right time. They were a team that needed another center for depth, and they would be much better. They looked like they weren’t going to acquire anyone and then the St Louis Blues were willing to part with Paul Stasny. The Jets rushed to get a deal done and they did. Stasny has good experience and will put this team over the top. I pick them as my #yousilly winners at the deadline because I think the Jets have the chance to come out of the west and be in the Stanley Cup Final, and if you think otherwise then you silly.
Those are three winners from the Trade deadline! Come back on Thursday and we will look at three losers from the deadline!
