The NHL has officially announced they are adding a 32nd team to Seattle, Washington. The news broke Tuesday morning and Seattle’s first season in the NHL will be in 2021.
Seattle will be adding its sixth pro sports team as they are already home to the Seahawks (NFL), Mariners(MLB), Sounders (MLS), Storm (WNBA) and Reign (NWLS). Seattle is a growing area and now has a passionate fan base of sports lovers, now they look to include hockey in their market.
Now that the NHL has expanded once again they will need to another expansion draft which will take place after the 2020-21 season. We are only three years away from that and teams will once again need to protect players and expose others to the chance of being taken away from them. A lot can change in three years and the free agents available and young players available will be much different than it was two seasons ago. After a very successful first season for the Golden Knights the optimism should be high in Seattle.
With the addition of the new team the NHL will slightly alter its divisions. The Arizona Coyotes will be moving from the Pacific Division to the Central Division in order for Seattle to fit in the Pacific. This gives the NHL 8 teams in every division and 16 teams per conference.
The Seattle franchise will begin play in the Pacific Division of the Western Conference and the @ArizonaCoyotes will realign to the Central Division. https://t.co/gYSiUWAreM #NHLSeattle pic.twitter.com/bT9myflZLF

The team has begun its name search and hopes to have the team mascot and name finalized by the year 2019.
