NFL Overtime Rules Do NOT Need To Change

The Chiefs and Bills went into overtime Sunday night. Listen, we’re not starting this one with any clever anecdotes or references: the NFL overtime rules to NOT need to change. This is a fact. Sit with it. Take it in. Acknowledge it. I’ll give you a moment.

.

.

Okay, now that you’ve come to your senses, let me explain.

Last night the Chiefs and Bills had, arguably, the best game of the year. Long story less long, there were 25 points scored in the final 2 minutes of the 4th and it was pure insanity. The game got sent to OT tied 36-36 and the Chiefs won the coin toss. And to the surprise of no one, Mahomes and company went right down the field and scored a touchdown, thus winning the game. Aaaand cue the unnecessary outrage!

There’s about ten dozen more tweets like this, but you get the point. Firstly, though, I do want to say one thing. I can understand the crying out for the OT rules to change. I don’t agree, but I get it. You want both teams to touch the ball, right? Okay, let’s play that out. Take this situation, for instance: Chiefs go down and score a TD. Bills go down and score a TD, which leads to…what? Does it become sudden death? Because you’d all STILL complain if that was the case. Because what if the Chiefs go down and kick a lucky field goal to win? You’re telling me you guys still wouldn’t say “Well Josh Allen didn’t have a chance to respond!” The madness has to end somewhere.

Overtime Is Do Or Die

Overtime is meant to be high stakes which means it’s not always going to be fair. That’s just the way of the world and it’s no different in sports. How many times have we all said “DAMN! If Team X just had 2 more minutes they would’ve won that game! Momentum was on their side!” But guess what? Sometimes things just don’t work out. Sometimes you lose. It is what it is!

The defense gets paid to, ladies and gentlemen. It’s not like it was years ago where first score wins. All you need to do as a defense is not allow a 75 yard drive (assuming a touchback), that’s it! If you can’t come up with one stop there, then too bad. You played a great game, but you lost. Your team didn’t stop the opposing team. You lose. Wild concept, huh? Maybe if your defense made an extra stop during regulation, you wouldn’t even be in OT to begin with. We can’t just let an entire phase of the game off the hook because you want more fun.

The line has to be drawn somewhere. Yes, it would’ve been fun to see these two teams duel it out for another few drives, but what? Now we’re changing rules just so we can all have fun? Come on. And let’s not turn a blind eye to the fact that there’s a TON of bias going into this outcry too. People who wanted the Bills to win make up a large majority of this fake need for a rule change. The NFL can’t change a rule due to the fact that the team you root for didn’t benefit from said rule. Case in point: Chiefs fans were screaming from the rooftops when the Pats beat them in OT in 2018 to go to the Super Bowl. Where are those people now? Ah yes, now that your team benefited from it, therefore, you’re silent. See the hypocrisy?

CONCLUSION:

No matter what the rules are, someone is going to complain. All I’m saying is that you have to put your foot down at some point. At some point stakes have to come into play. If you don’t stop this team here, you lose. That’s a major part of sports in general. You can’t take that away because you were having too much fun or didn’t like the outcome.

P.S. The funny part is, the guy who lost because of this rule is actually okay with it. Because he understands sports.
