Never Doubt Brandon Beane

It’s crazy what a winning culture does for a team. I know the Buffalo Bills have a bad history when it comes to Super Bowls but things are definitely starting to look up for the franchise. One of the biggest reasons why the Bills are a Super Bowl contender, general manager Brandon Beane. In this article, I’m going to give a couple of reasons why Brandon Beane is one of the best general managers in the NFL.

No Cap Space? No Problem

Joe B: 5 takeaways from Buffalo Bills GM Brandon Beane at the pre-draft press conference (4/16/18)

Don’t let the title of this section fool you, the Bills did have some cap space but not a lot to go big game hunting if you will. At the beginning of free agency, Buffalo had less than $10 million in cap space and it didn’t look like they were going to do a whole lot of spending in the offseason. Turns out that wasn’t the case at all and some of the players took some pay cuts, which I’ll get to in a minute. They were able to resign players like Matt Milano, Isaiah McKenzie, John Feliciano, Levi Wallace and Daryl Williams. On top those resignings, they were able to sign Emmanuel Sanders, Mitchell Trubisky, Jacob Hollister and most recently Efe Obada. It’s crazy to think he was able to bring back the team from last season for the most part and sign a couple of new players as well.

Winning Changes Everything

Watch: Beane and McDermott Press Conference

I get it, the Bills haven’t won a Super Bowl and you’re probably wondering why are you using “winning changes everything” as the title? While the Bills haven’t won a championship, both Beane and head coach Sean McDermott have changed the culture in the locker room. Buffalo has taken the next step this previous season. They made the playoffs, they won the division and won not one but two playoff games. The bar is set and next year, it’s Super Bowl or bust. Both Beane and McDermott have created such a great culture here that players are willing to take a pay cut or don’t want to go anywhere else even though another team offered them more money.

A few examples of this occurred this offseason. Starting off with wide receiver Isaiah McKenzie, he said seven or eight teams offered him a contract but he chose the Bills because he loves it in Buffalo and he realizes how close they are to winning it all. McKenzie also said that if the Bills offered him candy and not money he would still resign. Cornerback Levi Wallace is another example of not caring more about the money. Before resigning with the Bills last week, Wallace told his agent to not see what other teams offered him. He also realized how close Buffalo is to winning a title. It helps that some players were released but the fact that players are willing to help out the team even if it requires them taking a pay cut is exactly what you want on your team.

Final Thoughts

The future of the Buffalo Bills is very bright and they are very close to winning their first Super Bowl. It takes good players to win a title and in order to do that, you need to have good management. That’s exactly what this team has and a huge part of their success is because of Brandon Beane.
