MLB Recap: Baseball Is Trying To Come Back…Good Or Bad?

Before I start this article, I want to correct a mistake I made in my last article. I said Hunter Pence was a Texas Ranger. I was wrong, he is back with the San Francisco Giants.

Okay now that I got that out of the way, on to the bigger topic. Will baseball return and how will it return? At the end of the day yes baseball will return, but when and how is the questions that need to be answered. Some of the ideas that are floating around are to play in Japan, or play in Florida and Arizona using Spring Training Facilities. Here are the ideas and my thoughts on them.

Japan All-Star Series preview: Story lines to know, full MLB ...

MLB Looking At Japan To Play Games

According to ESPN’s Tim Kurkjian, the idea has been talked about to move all Major League Baseball games to Japan. The main reason is that Japan’s timetable for the coronavirus is ahead of the USAs’. So, they will be able to play games soon. So the way it would work is the Japan League would play at night while the MLB plays during the day.

So for my opinion, there are a lot of flaws with this idea. Kurkjian does say that this idea is far from happening so I am not far off from other people. First off, there is a 13 hour time difference from the Eastern Time Zone to Japan. So lets’ say a game is starting at 1pm in Japan, that is 12am. I do not think many people on the east coast will want to stay up until 12 just to see the start of the game. Also, this reason will be similar on both ideas is that players do not want to be that far away from their families for a whole baseball season.

What could things look like for Red Sox if MLB realigns divisions ...

MLB Wanting To Do A Regular Season At Spring Training Facilities

According Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the MLB is always looking to use Spring Training facilities as sites for games. As many baseball fans know, Florida and Arizona are not split up into American League and National League teams. So the divisions would be changed for this shorten season. The divisions would go as followed:

GRAPEFRUIT LEAGUE

  • NORTH: New York Yankees, Philadelphia Phillies, Toronto Blue Jays, Detroit Tigers, Pittsburgh Pirates.
  • SOUTH: Boston Red Sox, Minnesota Twins, Atlanta Braves, Tampa Bay Rays, Baltimore Orioles.
  • EAST: Washington Nationals, Houston Astros, New York Mets, St. Louis Cardinals, Miami Marlins.

CACTUS LEAGUE

  • NORTHEAST: Chicago Cubs, San Francisco Giants, Arizona Diamondbacks, Colorado Rockies, Oakland Athletics.
  • WEST: Los Angeles Dodgers, Chicago White Sox, Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Indians, Los Angeles Angels.
  • NORTHWEST: Milwaukee Brewers, San Diego Padres, Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers, Kansas City Royals.

So I do kinda like this idea for different divisions for a shorten season. If this season would be different than all others why not have it be completely changed? I do not think there is a true weak division in the whole league. It would make for a really fun playoff race to see maybe a surprise team make it. But for the negatives, the USA still has a long time before the coronavirus is over and it is safe to go out. Players do not want to leave their families for however long it takes to play the full season.

Wrap Up

So Major League Baseball is considering all ideas on how to play as soon as possible. With every idea in today’s world, there are a lot of flaws in them. I am hoping for some baseball in the near future, but I want everyone to stay health. So whatever they can do to keep their players healthy I am up for, even if that is waiting longer for the season to start.
