MLB Free Agent Market Is All Over The Place

It is no surprise that the MLB market was expected to be a little different this year. No one could have predicted it be this bizarre, though. In the last 24-48 hours, we have seen two free-agent signings, and both came with shock to the baseball world, but for opposite reasons. David Dahl signed a 1 year deal with the Rangers, while James McCann inked a 4 year deal with the New York Mets.

Dahl’s Deal

David Dahl is one of the most under-appreciated outfielders in all of baseball. Coming off an injury year in 2020, Dahl is looking to regain his form from 2018 and 2019. Dahl is currently entering his 5th year in the league and hit .273 in 2018 and .302 in 2019 while showing some power with 16 dingers in 2018 and 15 in 2019. He was named to the NL All-Star team in 2019. That is no fluke; Dahl is very talented and a legit MLB star. With that said, what if I told you he is only getting paid 3 million dollars? That’s right; Texas only had to pay this man 3 million dollars to get him to sign on the dotted line. What an absolute STEAL! Not going to lie; this is the type of move I expected Bloom to make, but nope instead, they are interested in paying to bring back JBJ, who couldn’t hit water if he fell out of a boat.

McCann’s Deal

Now to the opposite end of a surprising deal, James McCann. The Mets signed McCann to a 4 year 40 million dollar deal. Now, I’m not saying that he isn’t worth it, but he is a 30-year-old catcher, and this deal will take him until he is 34. In case you didn’t know, catchers north of 30 don’t always play up to their “prime.” That said, McCann was an All-Star in 2019 and had a career year where he batted .273 with 18 home runs and 60 RBI’s. IF McCann returns to those numbers for 2-3 of the 4 years, the deal won’t look that bad. McCann only appeared in 31 of the 60 games this year and batted .289 with 7 homers and 15 RBI’s.

Conclusion

Dahl gets drastically underpaid while McCann gets slightly overpaid. The reason I’m surprised by both is simply one minute it confirms my thoughts of the market being drastically lower than expected, and then the next, it is right back to over-paying 30-year-old catchers. I have no idea what’s going on with this free-agent market. One minute it is extremely low, the next extremely high. Good for McCann getting his money, but man Dahl took a huge pay cut.
