McCarthy Firing is Rodgers Best Birthday Gift Ever

Aaron Rodgers turned 35 yesterday. He’s not getting any younger. And Mark Murphy recognizes that. So to try to take advantage of the small window the Packers have left, Murphy fired Mike McCarthy. Unless the Packers made some incredible playoff run, most people assumed McCarthy was gone. He got a free pass last season because Rodgers was injured. There’s no excuse this year.

McCarthy has continued to make the same mistakes over and over again. He constantly abandons the run game. He too often calls big shot plays. For some reason he keeps feeding Jamaal Williams despite being lightyears behind Aaron Jones. And he refuses to innovate the offense at a time when creative young coaches are dominating the league. Yesterday really was the icing on the cake. The Packers basically needed to win out. Playing the Cardinals at home was a good way to get momentum. Instead, the Packers struggled the whole game with a team who’s only beat the Niners this year. Jamaal Williams got 11 touches for 27 yards. Aaron Jones got only 4 more touches, despite being one of the most dynamic players on the offense. At the end of the game, McCarthy took some shots to the end zone instead of making the 48 yard field goal in snow easier for Mason Crosby.

Joe Philbin will be the interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Philbin was the OC and play caller for Green Bay from 2007-2011. In those five seasons, the Packers ranked in the top 10 in points and yards every single year. Oh, and they also won a Super Bowl. Unfortunately for Packers’ fans, this switch to Philbin comes to late. Even if he’s able to turn the offense around and run the table, the Packers’ playoff hopes are all but dashed. If anything, it will show that McCarthy could’ve actually saved his job if he could’ve swallowed his pride and given up play calling duties. Regardless of how this year plays out, the Packers finally have a chance to get an innovative head coach that can take advantage of the 4 or 5 good years that Rodgers has left. This will certainly be Rodgers last chance to get some more rings and finally be a serious contender for the GOAT discussion.
