Marc Savard Officially Announces Retirement
Seven years after the hit that cost him his NHL career, Marc Savard, who played with the Boston Bruins from 2006-2011, officially announced his retirement on Monday on his Twitter account.
Savard played 13 NHL seasons with four different teams. He signed with the B’s in 2006 along with Zdeno Chara.
It was the beginning of the end in the spring of 2010 when Pittsburgh Penguins Matt Cooke delivered a cheap shot that left Savard motionless on the ice for several minutes – a hit that Bruins fans remember vividly.
Savvy would come back the following season, but would only play 25 games before being the victim of a Matt Hunwick hit against the glass in Colorado that sealed the end of Savard’s career.
Savard inked a seven-year, $28.15 million contract extension in 2009, which put a hold on his official retirement announcement.
He had his name included on Stanley Cup when the Bruins won it in seven games against the Vancouver Canucks in 2011.
Savard notched 22 points in the 25 playoff games he appeared in – all with Boston.
