Let’s Check in on Our Old Friend Joe Kelly, Shall We?

A lot of us are trying different things during this global pandemic. For some, it’s catching up on reading. For others like myself, they’re dieting and getting into a good everyday exercise routine. Man, do I miss roast beef sandwiches, (North Shore MA thing!) Reese’s, and Buffalo Chicken calzones! But for other people, they’re trying to perfect their craft. Former Red Sox and current Dodgers relief pitcher Joe Kelly is trying to do just that. We all know Kelly can throw extremely hard. What we didn’t know is that Kelly is trying to perfect a changeup for next season. How’s that going, you may ask? Well, let’s check in with the Kelly household, shall we?

I have a few issues with this.

Look How Big The Damn Net Is!

I mean Joe, buddy, pal. How can you possibly miss a target that big and wide? Holy smokes man! Even I can hit that net and I can’t throw harder than 55 MPH anymore. It takes a special type of talent to miss the net from that distance. At least short hop the changeup if need be. We love you here in Boston, Joe. But come on man, you have to hit the net when it’s THAT big!

Throw The Changeup Like You Would In The Game

When you’re a pitcher, there’s a big key to having an effective changeup. Throw it exactly how you would your fastball. Back when I was younger, I pitched a little bit. I couldn’t throw an effective curveball, so how could I get outs with more than just a fastball? The changeup! My changeup worked because I threw it exactly the same way as my fastball. The results? Hitters were out on their front foot and they made weak contact. Joe Kelly’s changeup can be very good, considering he throws in the triple digits. But if you throw it like that, you’re getting nowhere. I get it, he’s probably still feeling out the grip. But might as well grip it and rip it, right?

In Conclusion

I give credit to Joe for trying to bring another pitch into his repertoire. You can’t miss that badly with a pitch though. For any normal working person, this might be a major inconvenience. With Joe Kelly, it’s probably a very minor issue. Like I mentioned before, we’ll always love Joe Kelly in Boston. But yeah man, that ain’t it! Will Joe Kelly try to learn another different pitch? Well, if we hear about another window breaking in the Kelly household, we’ll know our answer!
