Another day, another disgruntled super-star in the NBA. What else is new?
This kind of thing is starting to become the norm around the NBA. Whether it’s good or bad for the league is hard to say. One thing I do know is that this is AWFUL for Minnesota, I think that just goes without saying. Jimmy Butler is an All-Star, All-NBA talent. Minnesota didn’t have to give up much to land him, but it would still suck to see him walk for nothing.
According to Bleacher Report, Butler is fed up with the younger players on his team and their “nonchalant approach” to their careers. I would assume this is directed towards Karl-Anthony Towns and Andrew Wiggins specifically. And if that’s really the case, I call bull shit. Wiggins I could understand, but not Towns. That team has other problems outside of guys potentially not caring enough, and they start at the top.
Tom Thibodeau is a terrible head coach/GM. He was fine in Chicago, but the game is different now. You can’t run your starters into the ground all season and expect them to be ready to go come playoff time. He runs what feels like a six-man rotation all season long and buries his younger talent on the bench for guys who used to be good (Jeff Teague). Not to mention his offense in no way is directed to go through their best player, KAT. There were times last year where Towns was getting single-digit shot attempts for some games. Karl-Anthony Towns is a generational talent. In no way should he be getting less than 10 shot attempts per game FOR MULTIPLE GAMES. No wonder they underperformed so much. Part of me feels like he just can’t let go of those Bulls days. Maybe that’s why he has three of the key players from his run as head coach there (Rose, Butler, Gibson).
If Butler wants to leave the Wolves then fine, but their problem isn’t the players. It’s the coach and front office. They haven’t had a promising team since the Garnett days. They need to clean house and find a coach/GM that actually wants build around Towns before he decides that he wants out next.
