It’s Completely Sacrilegious for a Boston Bruins Fan to Root for the Montreal Canadiens in the Stanley Cup Finals
The Montreal Canadiens were the first team in the NHL to punch their ticket to the Stanley Cup Finals on Thursday night. Montreal defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 3-2 in Game 6 at home in an overtime thriller.
The overtime thriller part is more tongue and cheek because Montreal scored almost immediately.

The Canadiens will compete for the Stanley Cup for the first time since 1993. That was the last time Montreal won the coveted Lord Stanley Cup defeating Wayne Gretzky and the Los Angeles Kings in five games.
On Thursday night, the Canadiens continued their improbable run in the postseason defeating a very good Golden Knights team. Montreal had the worst regular-season record (.527 points percentage) of any team in the playoffs.
The Canadiens will face the winner of the Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Islanders. Those two teams will play Game 7 on Friday night from the Amalie Center in Tampa Bay.
If you are a Boston Bruins fan, you no longer have any skin in the game. The Bruins were eliminated by the Islanders in six games. But like any sports fan, you generally hitch on to another team’s wagon and root for them to win the Stanley Cup.
Bruins Fans Should Never Root for the Canadiens

The Montreal Canadiens are the Boston Bruins biggest rival. You can argue the rankings between the New York Yankees and Montreal Canadiens as the two most hated teams in the city of Boston.
There are only three teams remaining in the playoffs and it’s hard for fans of any city to root for the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Lightning are have seen sustained success on the ice over the last handful of years. In addition, the Lightning are the reigning Stanley Cup champions, it is safe to say that fans might want to see a new winner.
The Islanders out played the Bruins during their playoff matchup. The New York “Saints” took advantage of the Bruins beat up defensive unit and an injured Tuukka Rask. The Islanders play a similar style of hockey to the Bruins, however they are a New York team and it doesn’t feel right rooting for them.
I find it to be completely sacrilegious for a Bruins fan to be openly rooting for the Canadiens.
It’s just not right.
As a Bruins fan you are rooting against the sweater and the logo of Montreal. The Canadiens have some likable players including Brendan Gallagher who I would love to see wearing a Bruins sweater before the end of his career.
Montreal Canadiens Fans now in the Stanley Cup
I also can’t root for the Canadiens because of their fans. This is the same fanbase that called 911 following the Zdeno Chara hit on Max Pacioretty.
Imagine being a Bruins fan, openly rooting for the Canadiens and their fans to win a #StanleyCup
That’s the same fan base that wanted YOUR captain, Zdeno Chara criminally charged for this hit on Max Pacioretty#GoBolts or #Isles in four over Montreal pic.twitter.com/c4PKHok0Vd

Back in 2011, during a match up between Boston and Montreal, bedlam would ensue on and off the ice. Following the face-off, the puck would kick out near the Bruins and Canadiens benches. Pacioretty skated towards the puck and flipped it out of his zone.
Chara unsuccessfully tried to keep the puck in the offensive zone with his stick, failed and then shoved Pacioretty from the side into the bench area. Pacioretty’s face and neck would hit the glass and he would fall to the ice unconscious for six minutes.
It was a scary moment and Chara was given a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct.
Montreal fans went bat shit crazy following the play demanding police to charge Chara criminally for the hit. The Montreal police would have to release a statement asking for fans to only call 911 for actually emergencies.
This is the fan base you’d be rooting for Boston. Go back down memory lane when this hit happened and then the aftermath. Think of how crazy it was for Canadiens fans to be asking for your captain to be arrested for a hit on the ice.
Conclusion
If you are a Boston Bruins fan and you are publicly rooting for the Canadiens, then you’d probably root for the Russians over USA back in 1980. The Canadiens run in the NHL playoffs might be a cute story for some, but there are somethings ingrained in my DNA that I just can’t fight.
I won’t be rooting for the Canadiens, end of story.
The Big Jim Murray’s of the world and Michael Felger from 98.5 The Sports Hub can root for Montreal. I can’t for one minute truly believe they want to see this team hoist the cup over their heads, but I digress.
Unless it’s just me and I am an angry ornery fan pissed at the laundry the Canadiens players wear on the ice. However, as a Bruins fan, I was raised to hate the enemy.
I will never root for the New York Yankees and I sure as hell won’t root for Montreal in the Stanley Cup finals. Bruins fans rooting for the Canadiens, smarten up, you’re better than this.
