Is Cam Newton in the Patriots’ plans?
The New England Patriots took a leap of faith this off-season in acquiring former League MVP Cam Newton on a one-year deal. Things looked promising after the first couple weeks when the team was 2-1, and that one loss was against a team that could be competing for a Super Bowl when February rolls around.
However, after Newton tested positive for COVID-19, things seemed to shift in the Patriots organization. The team went on a three-game losing streak, and Newton was struggling. The team put themselves in a hole at 2-5, leaving question marks to Patriot fans and the rest of the league.
Now, the Patriots are in an odd spot after winning their last two games, putting themselves back in the middle of the pack and potentially fighting for a playoff spot. People were wondering if the Patriots would draft their next franchise quarterback at the 2021 NFL Draft. However, with the draft only having two potential franchise-changing quarterbacks, the Patriots do not seem to be in the mix for those players. It leaves you wondering, would the Patriots consider bringing back Newton on a long-term deal?
I believe Cam Newton and the Patriots would be a good thing for both parties. The Patriots can use that time to figure what their long-term plans are going to be at quarterback, and Newton can continue to improve his football career.
The way I see it is that the Patriots don’t seem to know what is going to be happening at the quarterback position, but they pride themselves on winning. So, what is going to give them the best chance to win? To me, that will be Cam Newton. A lot will need to be decided in these next weeks, but Cam Newton should be considered the New England Patriots’ long-term future until then.
