Is A Possible Shortened MLB Season A Good Thing?

Unless you live under a rock, by now you know that the pandemic of the Coronavirus has delayed or canceled all college and professional sporting events till further notice. What an asshole huh? Anyway, could a shortened MLB season be a good thing for the league?

Over the past several years there has been, and continues to be, a lot of talk of how baseball is dying, the games are to slow, the season is too long, blah blah blah. I can sit here and argue with any of you till we are all blue in the face, the bottom line is if this is handled correctly, this could be a huge boost for the MLB moving forward. Major League Baseball has delayed the start of opening days for at least two weeks if you ask me it will end up being longer. That puts opening day to start right around April 9th.

What MLB should do is simply not try to make-up any of the games that will be affected by the delay to the start of the season. All teams will be affected by this so there is no real advantage from one team to another. It will allow for the MLB to also see if there is a growth in interest from game to game. For example, the Red Sox will end up losing 13 games during this two-week delay, turning their season from a 180 game season to a 167 game schedule. Still a long season but getting a little shorter with a little more emphasis on every game and series.

For the record, I am fully on board with the MLB season being cut down. I don’t know how much it should be cut down but I think having a shorter season makes it a little easier to watch the entire year. Us millennials and the generation coming up now, can’t focus on anything for more than 30  seconds. Baseball needs the younger generation to buy into its sport and one way to do that might be looking into a shortened season. This delay could be a good way to test run the shortened season.
