Invest In Cam!
I know it’s only been one week, but it is time to invest into Cam Newton folks! He’s the quarterback of the “future”. He is breathing new life in one of the greatest sports organizations. He’s given this team some swag that they haven’t had in a couple years. Investing into Cam will be the right decision and here’s why:
Its Contract Extension Time
Yes, you read that right it’s time to give Cam a contract extension. To be honest they should’ve given him one yesterday. No, I’m not talking about a 4 or 5 year deal. I’m talking about a 1/ 2 year extension. The reason why is because Cam is invested into this team and they are invested in him. Also he’s a leader in the locker room already and he hasn’t even been here for a full season yet. So a short term extension with real money in the deal will make him happy and adding injury provisions to protect the team seems like it would be the best of both worlds. While giving him a 3 year extension could be risky, and giving him a 1 year extension does not define a true window. I believe that the Patriots should give Cam Newton a 2 year extension with real guaranteed money. Plus a solid bonus that will have him committed to this window for three seasons including this one. My thoughts on an extension for him should be a 2 year extension for about 30-35 million with 15-20 million guaranteed, and you add a roster bonus for about 5-7 million. Yes, I know that is a lot of money up front. But give him a two year deal with the money up front! It won’t have a true cap tied to it and you could cut ties after year one of the extension if it doesn’t work out. Again this is a win for Cam and a win for the organization.
Go Load Up!
If you do sign Cam to said extension, then you identified a window to truly compete for a championship. If it ends up being a three year window(including this year), especially with focus to being on 2021 and 2022; that’s great news for the Patriots. This window depends not only on Cam, but how the key players in the draft classes of 2018, 2019, and 2020 perform this season. Then you will have a core of key players to go with for this next run. Once they identify those key pieces, then given their cap situation if the cap isn’t crap by the 2021 and 2022 season (which it most likely won’t be); the Patriots should be able to load up. Depending on how the Patriots start this season, they should go try and load up now leading up to the trade deadline. I’m talking about adding to the offense. If the Patriots can acquire OBJ, Allen Robinson or Zach Ertz by the deadline that would be a strong indication of there being loaded up. The Patriots need an x-factor receiver/tight end to help get the most out of Cam Newton that they can.
The Belichick Factor
Like I’ve mentioned before Belichick isn’t getting younger and is closing in on his seventies. How many more years will he be the head coach or even want to be the head coach? Will he want to go through a long retool or rebuild? Given the fact that he is close to Don Shula’s wins record and he is in the pursuit of his 7th ring, it is not out of line to think the Pats can be in the AFC Championship game this year and in the future. Given the cap space this offseason to go along with the offseason after that. It is possible that they could be Super Bowl contenders yet again especially if they loaded up the roster on offense and committed to Cam for the foreseeable future.
I want to leave you all with this opinion that I have. Cam and Bill have a good relationship so far as it seems. My takes aren’t as crazy as it may seem. If they add some weapons for Cam on offense the AFC should be put back on notice that “WE ARE STILL HERE!”
