Highly Anticipated Rematch Targeted to Headline UFC Calgary

The rematch everyone wanted to see has been targeted for UFC Calgary. Dustin Poirier and Eddie Alvarez both have their sites on a title shot, and both men are at the top of the UFC’s lightweight division. Dustin Poirier is coming off a TKO win over Justin Gaethje in Arizona a couple of weeks ago. Eddie Alvarez is coming of a KO win over Justin Gaethje all the way back in December at UFC 218. Both men looked phenomenal in their fights against Gaethje.

Alvarez and Poirier have already fought once before at UFC 211. The fight was very high paced and back and fourth. That was until Poirier connected with a punch that put Alvarez on shaky legs. Poirier started to swarm Alvarez, but in true warrior fashion Eddie Alvarez stayed on his feet and wasn’t scared to fire back at Poirier. This made the crowd and UFC commentator Joe Rogan to go absolutely insane. Both men were throwing a flurry of power shots. Alvarez eventually hurt Poirier with a body shot and took him down. While they were down Alvarez hit Poirier with an illegal knee, which ended the fight. Herb Dean said the Knee was unintentional so the fight was ruled a no contest. Alvarez and Poirier showed a great deal of respect towards one another, after the fight. That all changed when Poirier was calling for a rematch, but Eddie Alvarez had his sights set on Justin Gaethje. Finally after a long wait we get to see these two square off again, in a fight that can honestly be a fight of the year candidate.

With Khabib taking some time off till November, this fight between Poirier and Alvarez will most likely determine who’s next in line for a title shot. The Co-main event will feature former UFC champion Jose Aldo facing off against Jeremy Stephens. Stephens is coming off a spectacular KO win against Josh Emmitt. Aldo is coming off two consecutive loses to Max Holloway. Many fans have been saying Jose Aldo should retire, and even Aldo said he has contemplated it. Eventually Aldo decided he wants to fight a couple more times, but this fight against Stephens is important for him. For Aldo this fight against Stephens is to prove he still has what it takes to be a top contender in the UFC’s Featherweight division. Jeremy Stephens is looking at this fight as a way to make him next in line for a title shot.
