On September 17th 2013 Rockstar games released the giant that is Grand Theft Auto V. Yes you are reading that date right. It’s been going and going like an energizer bunny. Who would have thought that 7 years later, it would be stepping into another console. Lets take a look at this gaming giant.
Grand Theft Auto was introduced to the world in 1997 for MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows. The game would then be released a few months later for Playstation where it starts to pick up. Originally named Race ‘n’ Chase the game focused on a criminal hired to do jobs around a fictional city for different syndicates. Jobs can be stealing vehicles to taking out competition on a different territory.
GTA had multiple sequels that released over the years, introducing GTA 2, GTA British Edition, including the one that got everyone’s attention, GTA 3. GTA 3 was the first game to have the 3D effect on the game, releasing it from it’s overhead view. Released for Playstation in 2001, computer in 2002, and Xbox in 2003, GTA 3 was a huge success.
With GTA 3 a huge success, developers brought the game in a few different directions. Starting with Vice City in 2002 and San Andreas in 2004, GTA introduced names and more story points to the games. With Vice City, the game is based in a fictional Miami city following former mobster Tommy Vercetti from GTA 3. San Andreas is based on fictional California and Nevada and based on Carl “CJ Johnson being brought home following the death of his mother.
With the changing of the systems, GTA let loose GTA 4 for Xbox and PS3. This game was much larger within the series and had much more interaction with the newer characters. Introducing Niko Bellic coming over to America for new opportunity, he lands where GTA began, in Liberty City. GTA 4 also brought forth the online gameplay and and expansion packs for the game, giving it some new life. The ballad of Gay Tony and The Lost and the Damned s added new plots from the GTA 4 storyline.
A Whole New World
GTA 5 in itself is a monster of a game taking up residence in the fictional world of Los Santos that takes it’s basis from Los Angeles. With it’s new formula, Rockstar and GTA have you at the control of not one main character, but 3! Michael, a former bank robber, Franklin, local kid just trying to find his groove in the world and make a buck, and Trevor, your run of the mill crazy man that is willing to kill to get what he wants. It’s a recipe for success as you navigate through all 3 of their lives and how they bring it all together.
Aside from the story, GTA 5 also introduces you to a bigger, broader online gameplay. With online, possibilities are endless. From clothes to vehicles to missions you can play not only on your own, but with another person as well. It sets up for more success and more failure as you eliminate the use of a non playable character. You can now complete tasks quickly or with error with less complaining about how a NPC messed up your mission.
With Downloadable content and updates that have gone on for 7 years, GTA 5 is been taking the game and players to a whole new world. And it’s not slowing down anytime soon, including new content dropping December 15th.
Toph’s Final Word
I began playing GTA 5 for the storyline, not so much the online features when it released for Xbox 360 in 2013. I’m still shocked that its transitioned to 3 different generations of consoles. From Xbox 360, to Xbox One, to soon Xbox Series S/X, Playstation 3, to PS 4 and soon PS 5. Thats 3 generations of consoles and this game is still not slowing down. From the open world map, and the multiple gaming modes, GTA 5 is far from over. Just playing the story and attempting to 100% the game is a chore. Yet once that is finished the online gameplay is almost never ending.
With GTA online the game takes it to almost a whole new level. From car races, to casino heists with prep work, it gives you a boatload of work to do, and play. Helping you grind out missions, heists, and other illegal activities, GTA gets you that money to buy cars, and businesses not available in the story mode offline.
I’m not saying it’s the best game out there, but a game that kicks a lot of hours to play and keeps going into new roles it’s far from a short game. I’m not saying you have to commit daily like old facebook games, and want that paper, it helps. Of course there will be sour eggs online that blow ya up and take your stuff, but thats apart of GTA. Question is, who wants it more?
