George Clooney and Ben Affleck Begin Filming of “The Tender Bar”
Today the Only In Boston Twitter account tweeted out a few photos of George Clooney and Ben Affleck filming their new movie, The Tender Bar.
George Clooney is in the South End today, directing a film starring Ben Affleck, set to be released by Amazon Studios.

The Tender Bar is being filmed in Boston but the overall setting takes place in New York City. The film is based off J.R. Moehringer’s memoir of the same name. The story is about a man (Moehringer) who is going through life without a father figure and tries to fill that void through the regular’s at his uncle’s bar. I am assuming Affleck will play the role of Moehringer, and Clooney will direct it and play a smaller role.
I was on a big Affleck kick this past weekend. I finally sat down and watched Gone Girl and I think that might be his best movie. I know how good he was in The Town and Good Will Hunting but Gone Girl was awesome. I also got around to seeing The Accountant not one of his best movies in my opinion but still a good, mindless action movie to watch.
But let’s talk a little about The Tender Bar. I am sure Ben Affleck will be good in this. Affleck isn’t much of an action guy, but he can make you feel. He is great in a heart string pulling drama. I mean the last role that he starred in was as Jack Cunningham in The Way Back. Another movie I liked because I love basketball, but also because he played such a great character that made you feel for his pain. The Tender Bar sounds like a movie I will watch when it is out on Netflix or Hulu. I probably won’t go out of my way to see it, but when I do get around to it (ie Gone Girl) I will like it a lot.
But, I am also not sure how I feel about Clooney directing it. The last three movies he directed have received an average of 36 on Rotten Tomatoes. Not saying Rotten Tomatoes holds any credibility but a 36 is a 36. Hopefully the writing and input from Moehringer can turn this into a decent movie that lives up to the hype. The Tender Bar does not have a released date but is anticipating for a late 2022 release.
