Former Pro Athletes Turned Doctors at Frontlines of Corona Virus

I know by now we are all tired of hearing about the corona virus. We want life to get back to normal so we can go back to work, school, and enjoy our sports. We want to plop down in front of the TV to watch some baseball and hockey and see our favorite teams back together again. While we are clamoring for sports, some former pro-athletes are at the frontlines helping patients who are sick with Covid-19. I am going to highlight two athletes turned doctors. Healthcare professionals deserve our appreciation and gratitude, especially during a time like this.

Myron Rolle

Rolle was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the sixth round of the 2010 NFL draft. He played his college football at Florida State while being enrolled in the Florida State University College of Medicine. He was awarded the Rhodes Scholarship, a prestigious post-graduate scholarship, that allowed him to study at Oxford to earn his masters in Medical Anthropology during the 2009-2010 academic year.

After being drafted he signed a four year contract with Titans, but left in 2013 to attend medical school. He graduated medical school in 2017. He then began his residency as a neurosurgeon at Mass General. Since the outbreak of Covid-19, Rolle has been on the frontlines treating patients with the deadly virus. His surgeon wing has been transformed to hold only corona virus patients. His responsibilities are shifting, and he and his staff are doing the best work they can possibly do.

Mark Hamilton

Mark Hamilton is a former professional baseball player that played for the Cardinals. He backed up Albert Pujols at first base during their World Series winning season in 2011. Hamilton only played 47 career games in the Majors and only collected 12 total base hits. He played his last Major League game in 2011. Four years ago, Hamilton began med-school at Donald and Barbara Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He is set to graduate a month early this upcoming Friday. He will immediately be thrust into a dire situation that requires all hands on deck.

In Conclusion

These guys are just two of the many brave and courageous people working countless hours to restore health and get us back to life as we used to know it. To all healthcare professionals and volunteers out there, thank you.
