Former Panthers Fullback has Something to Add on Cam Newton’s Release
When the Carolina Panthers released former MVP quarterback Cam Newton this offseason, opinions began to fly around. Tweet after tweet came in either defending, or criticizing, the former number one overall pick.
Cam Newton is 0-8 in his last 8 starts over 2 different seasons. In his last 4 starts, spread over 2 seasons, he has only attempted 13 passes beyond 15 yards on 160 attempts, and thrown 0TD to 4INTs. Yet #NFLTwitter wonders why Cam hasn’t been signed? https://t.co/1FQP86vQnr

Either way, it seems that the opinions of Newton range far and wide. Still, no one really knows what the quarterback looks like on the field after two injury-plagued seasons that caused him to either miss, or underperform in a litany of games.
But, according to former Panthers fullback Mike Tolbert, a lot of that blame has to be put on the franchise for how Newton has held up.

With Tolbert being a part of that Panthers locker room for some time, he has plenty of credibility in my eyes. Everyone had to have known Newton was ailing being around him day in and day out. Yet, Carolina felt inclined to throw him out there on each Sunday they could.
Granted, Newton probably pushed himself to play each week, but if your’e an organization with a franchise quarterback wouldn’t you do everything in your power to make sure he stayed healthy?
Newton missing a couple games may have seemed like the end of the world at the time, but his longterm health should have been the main focus. That is especially true since he was one of the main reasons their franchise made the Super Bowl back in 2016.
Now, the idea the Newton is a franchise quarterback may have changed with the change in ownership, but that doesn’t mean that the team should have just left him out there to get hurt over and over again.I mean, the guy even said he was unable to throw the ball 30 yards!
.@CameronNewton goes behind the scenes of his shoulder injury, giggling off to sleep before surgery and admitting he couldn’t throw 30 yards 😅 #KeepPounding

The Carolina Panthers did Newton zero favors. He was a star for them, practically putting them on the map. He became the face of their franchise and led multiple winning teams. The franchise repaid him by letting his body break down and cutting him when every NFL team had already decided their QB plans for the 2020 season.
This isn’t to say that all the blame belongs to the Carolina Panthers. But, from my perspective, they did their former star dirty. I think Newton feels the same way too.
