Fantasy Football: Sit ‘em or Start ‘em Week 1 Browns QB Baker Mayfield

As the fantasy football owners inch closer to the opening kickoff, they are scouring the internet for Start ‘em, Sit ‘em Week 1 advice. Should you start Baker Mayfield against the Chiefs?

I want to preface this in saying, it’s incredibly hard to evaluate and project Week 1 matchups. However, fantasy owners are always interested in the unknown and need help connecting the dots on who to start.

Fantasy Football Week 1 Start ‘Em: Quarterbacks

The absolute no-brainer, must starts or you deserve to lose QB’s:

  1. Patrick Mahomes, Chiefs (vs. CLE)
  2. Kyler Murray, Cardinals (at TEN)
  3. Lamar Jackson, Ravens (at LV)
  4. Tom Brady, Buccaneers (vs. DAL)
  5. Aaron Rodgers, Packers (at NO in JAX)

Sleeper QB to get the start for Week 1

Baker Mayfield, Cleveland Browns at Kansas City

Mayfield is one of if not the most underrated quarterback heading into fantasy this season. The 26-year-old has the weapons to spread the rock around too. He also has one full year in head coach’s Kevin Stefanski’s program.

Does that make Mayfield a Sit’em or Start ’em candidate for Week 1 against the Chiefs?

Last season, Mayfield threw for 3,563 yards and 26 touchdowns. Mayfield rushed 54 times for 165 yards and a touchdown in 16 games. The Browns signal caller is poised to build on that performance.

The Browns have arguably the league’s best offensive line. According to ProFootballFocus, they’ve graded his offensive line as the best in the NFL.

In addition to the offensive line, Mayfield will be getting back Odell Beckham Jr. The Pro-Bowl receiver was limited to seven games last season due to ACL injury.

Stefanski has a power running game, one of the best tandem’s in the NFL. If Mayfield is going to be considered anything more than a QB2 this season, Stefanski will need to let his quarterback sling the rock.

Baker Mayfield a Start ‘Em candidate? Or Sit ‘Em

Simple.

Last season the Browns had the No. 14 scoring offense in the NFL 25.5PPG. That was without having Beckham for a full season. Also, the Browns Nick Chubb missed four games. Fact is the Browns offense was never together for a full complete season.

Browns fans were able to see Mayfield against the Falcons during Week 3 of the preseason. The quarterback didn’t disappoint fans, Mayfield finished 6-of-10 for 113 yards and a score.

If Mayfield can throw the ball between 28-32 times in the game and not turn the ball over, he’ll be a safe start.

I’d expect the bulk of the fantasy production to come from the Browns running backs. Chubb and Kareem Hunt are a lethal one-two punch in the Browns offense.

The Chiefs Chris Jones and Jarren Reed will have their work cut out for themselves dealing with Chubb and Hunt. With the threat of them in the backfield should open up the Browns passing attack.

Hunt is a great flex start versus Kansas City. Beckham will return and be poised for a breakout game against the AFC’s best.

What’s it going to be? Baker Mayfield – Sit Em’ or Start ‘Em?

Mayfield will have a stable of playmakers around him this season. The former first overall pick should take another huge step forward this season.

The Chiefs defense projects to be more of a middle of the road fantasy defense. Kansas City generally relies on the big play and Mayfield could expose them with the many weapons at his disposal.

Kansas City’s meal ticket is their quarterback in Patrick Mahomes. The Chiefs defense has a chance to be decent, but the Browns might have too many weapons to contain. Mayfield needs to be great and not good this Sunday.

The Browns will pound the rock this week but Mayfield will have his chances. There are a lot of doubters regarding Mayfield. This could be his ultimate breakout year and it all begins against the Chiefs.

Start Baker Mayfield.
