Fantasy Football Preview: New Jets at Carolina Panthers

Week 1 is here, and the fantasy football world is rocking.  Fantasy football game preview is very important for prepping for your fantasy matchup.  Especially when there are a bunch of great matchups for fantasy football scoring. If I were to say this matchup had juice a year ago, you would probably stop listening to anything I had to say.  This season however, it is safe to say there is some excitement around this game.  Many fantasy relevant players are set to face off and other players are going to answer questions we’ve had all draft season.  I’m talking about the New York Jets at the Carolina Panthers.

Fantasy Football Preview

Must Play:

RB Christian McCaffrey, Carolina Panthers

Got to start the fantasy football preview with Mr. McCaffrey.  CMC missed most of the 2020 season due to injury.  The consensus number 1 overall pick is set up to go super saiyan in Week 1.  The Jets D/ST ranked 12th against the rush in 2020 but it doesn’t matter with a guy like McCaffrey.  The Panthers’ running back has the biggest bag in the NFL.  Can score points via touchdowns, rushing yards, receptions, and receiving yards.  Complete weapon for Carolina.  Finishing as the RB 1 in Week 1 is certainly on the table.

Others to Play:

WR DJ Moore & WR Robbie Anderson, Carolina Panthers

Going into the 2021, the New York Jets have one of the weakest cornerback rooms in the NFL according to PFF.  Both Moore and Anderson went for more than 1,000 receiving yards in 2020.  Moore was 5th and Anderson was 15th in Air Yards last year and can attack opposing secondaries.  DJ Moore finishing as a top 15 WR and Robby Anderson finishing as a top 30 WR are in the realm of possibilities.  Play em both in your WR 2 or Flex spot.

WR Corey Davis, New York Jets

Davis looked like the alpha WR in the Jets’ offense this preseason.  Whether the game is a shoot out or the Jets are in catch up mode, Corey D looks to be the beneficiary.  Currently the Jets’ wide out is ranked in the flex territory.  If he is a consideration for you flex, I’d lean playing him.

Who to look out for:

Both teams’ QBs

Sam Darnold is now the QB in Carolina and he is working with a phenomenal supporting cast.  That includes all the weapons I’ve mentioned and one that I will get to in a minute.  His offensive coordinator is also one of the most talented young offensive minds in the game.  In super flex or 2QB leagues, Darnold is a play but in 1 QB leagues I am sitting back and watching Sammy D on his new squad.

Zach Wilson was a top 3 pick in the NFL Draft for a reason.  He has a big arm, he is mobile, and the kid can make plays.  I have him ranked QB 20 because I think the Jets play back yard football late to try and catch up.  With his ability and his weapons on offense he could become a viable starter in fantasy in short order.

Rookie WRs

Elijah Moore is fast, agile, and put up a monster junior season at Ole Miss.  The 5’9” wide receiver draws comparisons of Tyler Lockett.  His ceiling is very high, and I am excited to see how it all translates to the gridiron.

Terrace Marshall has been a fantasy darling in the preseason.  His ADP skyrocketed throughout the draft season.  For good reason I will admit.  He looks like he could be another very capable producer for the Panther offense.  There are a lot of mouths to feed in Joe Brady’s offense. I want to see how Marshall fairs before I insert him in any of my lineups.

Avoid:

New York Jets Running Backs

The Jets are carrying 4 running backs, and no one can say with confidence how the carry pie will be split up.  Michael Carter seemed like a skilled rookie, but he broke camp as the 4th option.  Tevin Coleman has produced in the past but could be more of an obstacle in fantasy oppose to an asset.  Ty Johnson and Lamical Perine looked okay in 2020.  But which do you play in fantasy?  Exactly none of them in Week 1.

There are a few different ways this matchup could become a fantasy football team builders’ favorite.  Either it is a back-and-forth shootout, or the one team builds a lead and the other plays comeback.  Both possibilities present an opportunity for a ton of relevant fantasy scoring. Thank you for reading this fantasy football preview.  Be sure to check out the latest episode of Kiwoom and Jones.  And if you have a start/sit dilemma, refer to Kiwoom and Jones’ Week 1 Fantasy Football Rankings.
