Fantasy Baseball Tinder: Swipe Right on the Randy Arozarena Hype

When Fantasy Baseball meets Tinder, here’s a player to Swipe Right on. Save your Super Likes for these starting pitchers

On the grandest stage in baseball, Tampa Bay Rays outfielder Randy Arozarena dazzled before our eyes. During the Fall Classic, Arozarena went 8-for-22 with three home runs scoring five runs. Over the course of the postseason, he hit 10 home runs, scored 19 runs while driving in 14 RBIs.

Whenever Arozarena stepped up to the plate it was must see television. Fans of the Rays and beyond were mesmerized by every swing Arozarena took while at bat.

While Arozarena was a human highlight reel last October, what can fantasy owners expect from the 26-year-old outfielder this season?

Arozarena has only 99 career plate appearances so the sample size is extremely small. He missed time due to COVID-19 but while quarantined he taught himself how to cook. The slugger made healthy portions of chicken and rice, created a regular exercise routine and adding 15 pounds of muscle.

“I was eating healthy and I was controlling what I was eating,” Arozarena said via team translator Manny Navarro before the postseason last year. “Aside from gaining mass, I also gained strength.”

He’s a career .286 hitter with eight home runs and 13 RBIs. He was elite when he played for the Rays last season. The Rays slugger would crush fastballs, in fact he hit .316 and slugged .895 when thrown a fastball.

Last season opposing pitchers threw 98 breaking pitches to Arozarena and he struggled mightily. He hit .154 while slugging .154 and his whiff rate was 45.5%. Even with those challenges, big league hitters need to make adjustments at the plate and he should be able to improve this spring.

Fantasy owners will be enamored with what they saw during the postseason and they should. His remarkable postseason is tantalizing for owners as they look to find offensive production for their lineups.

FantasyPros projects Arozarena to hit .266 with 24 home runs and 71 RBIs. Those aren’t terrible numbers but his current ADP is 57 and quite frankly there is better production elsewhere if we’re going by projections alone. The Rays have a good lineup and he will play almost everyday. There shouldn’t be concern that he will have to platoon with some of the Rays on the roster.

Conclusion: Swipe Right

To answer the International Man of Mystery, Austin Powers, Randy Arozarena makes me randy.

He isn’t a bust by any stretch and Arozarena will be a solid addition to a potential championship lineup. You aren’t swinging for the fences in hoping Arozarena will be a solid addition to your lineup. Arozarena will be on the other hand trying to continue to assault opposing starting pitching.

He will be capable of hitting around .270 while hitting 25 taters this upcoming season. If he is able to swipe some bags and give you another category to target, he is a great pick. Be weary of selecting him around 57-65, but Arozarena is a legitimate fantasy weapon for your team this season.
