As mentioned on episode 29 of the Yellow Card Podcast, this years’ season across European tournaments is coming to an end and a sizzling one too. However, there are some international breaks in between allowing us fans to take a deep breath and catch a small break. Let’s talk about Euro 2020 qualifiers shall we?

With so much amazing talent brewing out of Europe, there are 5 names that come to mind to watch out for. So who are those 5?

Players to Watch For!

Erling Haaland:

We are starting red hot! The 20 year old Norwegian talent is having one of the best years of his young career ever. In the past 11 club league games, Haaland has managed to score 9 times and his ruthless streak doesn’t seem to be coming to a stop anytime soon. Haalnd currently plays for German side, Borussia Dortmund. Many pundits across the world have considered him to be the world’s upcoming greatest talent along with Kylian Mbappe.

The main issue for Haaland is, does Norway have enough support available for him to shine should they classify for World Cup glory?

Dries Mertens:

Another striker! When people think of Belgium, they immediately resort to high level caliber like Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku. In this case scenario though, While Mertens is 33 years old and could be playing his last World Cup, I can’t take him out of the equation for the World’s best international soccer team.

The Belgian has been a lethal threat in the Italian Serie A tournament and is actually the first Belgian to reach a milestone of scoring 100 goals in that tournament. Mertens currently plays for Italian side, Napoli and he happens to also be their all-time leading scorer. So the question remains, could it be that Mertens has found his own Midas touch and could be the story for Belgium’s deadly offensive attack come Qatar 2022? We will have to see how they do in the Euro qualifiers.

Harry Kane:

Harry is only 27 years old and easily one of England’s most lethal striker in this upcoming World Cup qualifying round. While his side Tottenham struggles to be competitive, Kane continues to be driven in his performance. In just 27 games, the Englishman has produced 17 goals and 13 assists. Harry will certainly be an issue for any defensive side looking to contain him as he is quite creative too.

Who else should we watch out for?

Kylian Mbappe:

At 22 years old, Mbappe is the youngest player in history to score 100 goals in Ligue 1 and is seen as the world’s next Lionel Messi. Kylian continues to be a lethal force and continues to deliver results. Will it be Mbappe vs. Haaland for years to come, yes absolutely!

I’m excited to see what he can bring for France in these qualifying rounds and hope to see him do his thing in the World Cup.

Robert Lewandowski:

Lewandowski could be looking to play his last ever world cup too. At 33 years old, Lewandowski has been keeping the world on notice. Ever since joining Bayern Munich, Lewandowski has been nothing short of impressive. While his age is a concern, his form isn’t by any means! Just this year he has scored 40 goals in 31 league and Champions league games! Also delivered 13 goals in the past 8 games.

Closing Remarks

These are just my top 5 so far but rest assure that there is a lot more talent to talk about in the upcoming weeks. Qatar 2022 will be a massive opportunity for many clubs but also for countries developing stronger soccer programs.
