ESPN’s Monday Night Football Could Be Getting A Shake Up
Despite Monday Night Football posting strong ratings for the second year in a row, ESPN is reportedly looking at mixing up its broadcasting booth once again.
In 2018, the MNF tandem of play-by-play announcer Joe Tessitore and color commentator, Booger McFarland helped replace the hole left by previous announcers Sean McDonough and John Gruden after Gruden decided to take the Oakland Raiders head coaching gig.
Dallas Cowboy’s tight end Jason Witten also “helped” with this transition, but decided to return to the field after just one season in the booth. Either way, ESPN has received tons of ridicule due to the performance of their on-air personalities.
As the play-by-play guy, the aforementioned Tessitore has rarely been the butt of the joke. Booger McFarland on the other hand? Yikes.
McFarland, a former NFL defensive tackle, has had numerous mess ups / obvious commentary that has prompted football fans and social media to go awry.
For example, in this past Saturday’s playoff matchup between the Buffalo Bills and Houston Texans, McFarland promoted the idea of Buffalo spiking the ball on fourth down as the Bills were attempting to tie the game late in the fourth quarter.
Even some NFL players, like Davante Adams, have had fun at McFarland’s expense this season.

Being MNF’s commentator has to be a tough gig, but holy bologna has Booger been bad. Even last year when Witten was up in the booth with Tessitore, his sideline presence on “Booger Mobile” failed to impress. I’m not sure how that got him a promotion, but who am I to ask.

With his lackluster broadcasting ability and the continuous knocks against him, McFarland has forced ESPN to look else where.
It has been reported that the company will look to acquire the talents of CBS Sports commentator Tony Romo, but I doubt CBS lets him slip away: he has become a fan favorite. I think a more likely scenario is that a player, like tight end Greg Olsen, is more suited to fill McFarland’s spot, but I guess we will have to wait and see.
Odds to be in the booth for Monday Night Football on ESPN for Week 1 of the 2020 season (Bovada):
