Eagles Sign LeGarrette Blount

Well, I was wrong about this one. Today the Eagles signed ex-Patriots running back LeGarrette Blount to a one-year deal worth up to $2.8M, according to Ian Rapoport. Because Blount signed with another team, the Patriots are entitled to a compensatory draft pick for 2018 from the Eagles. The round which the pick falls in should be based on how well Blount performs next season. I didn’t think a team would bite on him, given this whole thing with the pick, but what do I know?

In Philly, he will join a backfield consisting primarily of Darren Sproles, Ryan Mathews, and Wendell Smallwood. The Eagles saw some injuries to their running back core last year so the addition of Blount will definitely give them depth in the backfield. Blount was also the best free agent available and will be a great low-risk, high reward signing.

It’ll be sad to see him go, but it was only a matter of time before he left New England. The Patriots backfield is just too crowded right now, and the two sides were never going to see eye to eye on a new contract. Goodluck in Philly, LG. I’ll miss watching you run people over every game.
