Eagles Comeback Victory, Bill O’Brien, and Week Five Power Rankings

The Comeback

Late Sunday night Carson Wentz and the Philadelphia Eagles were trailing to the San Francisco 49ers. With a loss, the Eagles were going to be looking at a serious problem being 0-3-1 after four weeks of the 2020 NFL Season. The 49ers had a 14-11 lead with just six minutes remaining. Luckily, Wentz was able to connect with Travis Fulgham for a 42 yard touchdown to take the lead. Seconds later, the defense was able to return an interception for a touchdown and seal the deal resulting in a 25-20 win.

Although to viewers it looked like just any other game, a lot was on the line if Wentz was not able to get the victory against an injury riddled San Francisco team. Does Jalen Hurts get the next start for a winless Eagles team come week five? Something to consider. However, Wentz showed flashes of his 2017 MVP candidate season where he finished third in the voting.

With their first team win coming in week four, the Eagles are currently tied for first in the NFC East. As slow as they have started Philly is now right back on track to make a playoff berth for the fourth consecutive season. I do not expect them to beat Pittsburgh this coming Sunday but do not be surprised if this team gets healthier as the season progresses and sneaks into the playoffs with a division title at 7-8-1

Bill O’Brien Review

Even with an 0-4 start, is firing a Head Coach this early in the season an overreaction? O’Brien and Watson have led the Texans to a division title in four of their last five seasons. O’Brien is just third behind Belichick and Andy Reid in division titles over the past five years.  With such a challenging offseason it seems so rare to let go of a key member of a franchise so early. It is my guess that the Hopkins deal made his reputation take a serious hit within the organization and this slow start was a double down on his mistake. Romeo Crennel will take over as the interim Head Coach.

The Texans are completely out of the division race and are currently a long shot to reach the Postseason. A coaching hire will most likely come following the 2020 NFL Season from outside the organization. Tough times for the franchise after signing DeShaun Watson to a 4 Yr./ $160 M deal. I do not see the Texans doing better than 6-10 on their 2020 campaign.
