The Denver Nuggets’ front office must be kicking themselves right about now.
With the 13th pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, the Denver Nuggets selected the new face of their franchise. It’s too bad they had no idea. They were SO close, but they decided to trade Donovan Mitchell to the Utah Jazz for Trey Lyles and Tyler Lydon. Whoops!
Fast forward a year later, Donovan Mitchell just finished second in Rookie of the Year votes and took the Utah Jazz to the second round of the playoffs. Mitchell is doing a great job of filling the hole left by Gordon Hayward after he left Utah for the Celtics last Summer. Remember during the season when he gave that fan who tweeted at him tickets to a Jazz game so he could ask out a girl in his class? He truly is a man of the people, and he proved that again yesterday by pulling up to a fan’s 4th of July BBQ in Utah. That’s a guy I’ll take on my team all day, every day. Oh, and it turns out he’s pretty good at basketball too, so that’s a plus.
How many professional athletes would actually do this? I can’t think of a single one. This is why I love Donovan Mitchell. Something tells me he’s going to stick around in Utah for a while. And who knows, maybe he’ll be able to attract some more talent out there with him to really make Utah relevant again for the first time since the 90’s.
