Dodgers Padres Rivalry Heating Up and More – MLB Recap
For the first time this season I do not have a recap that features a no-hitter, sad. But there is still enough to write about. Is there a new best rivalry in baseball? I think so. Does a team have COVID issues? Yes they do. Is there a surprise atop one of the divisions early in the year? Oh yes there is!
Dodgers v Padres Round 1
Over the weekend the Dodgers and Padres squared off for the first time this season. Many people, including myself, have the Dodgers and Padres meeting in the playoffs. Well, this series in mid-April gave everyone playoff vibes.
Game 1 went 12 innings, with the Dodgers taking it 11-6. That game had homeruns and great plays. Corey Seager hit a 2 run homer in the top of the 12th to give the Dodgers the lead and what would go down as the game winning hit.
Game 2 was all about Clayton Kershaw. The end ended 2-0 in the Dodgers favor. Kershaw went 6 2 hit innings while also drawing a base loaded walk to make it 1-0 at that point. The Padres could not get anything going on Saturday.
Game 3 saw the Padres win 5-2. The Padres got down 2-0 after 2, but tied it in the 7th and score 3 in the 8th to take the lead. Eric Hosmer had a huge day, tying the game with a double then giving the Padres the lead with a single. This series makes it seem like it will be tight between the Dodgers and Padres all year long.
Twins Have COVID Delays
The Twins played on Friday 4/16 against the Angels then were off all weekend because of COVID. The Twins had 4 positive test over the weekend causing the delays. They were supposed to continue their series with the Angels, but those games will be made up later. On Monday the Twins were supposed to travel to Oakland to play the A’s. That got pushed back. The latest is the Twins are cleared to play a doubleheader on Tuesday against the A’s in Oakland. Let’s hope that as players get the vaccine and cases go down delays are less and less common.
Mariners Are In 1st Place
You read that right the Seattle Mariners are in 1st place in the AL West. They are tied with the Red Sox for best record in the American League. The Mariners are coming off of a 4-3 win over the Dodgers on Monday night. They have been rolling lately, winning 5 of their last 6 games.
It is early and the Mariners have started off hot before. The last time the Mariners fans saw playoff baseball was back in 2001. That is a long time. Could this year be the year they finally make it back? Actually yes, the AL West is a weaker division. The Astros are still a very good team, but they are not great, same with the A’s. If the Mariners can keep playing like this we could see a surprise team in the playoffs. That is a scary thing. They are playing with house money and could make a run at the World Series if they are let in.
Wrap Up
The Dodgers and Padres rivalry is heating up. The Twins are playing again after a short COVID delay. And the Mariners are in 1st place in the AL West. What could happen between now and Friday? Just wait and see! Catch me on Legends Lingo!
