The Patriots announced their nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year. This year’s nominee is none other than a well-deserving Devin McCourty. Just getting nominated for the WPMOY presented by Nationwide is a great honor. Each of the 32 teams nominates one player who is outstanding on the field and, more importantly, goes out of their way to serve their community. Devin McCourty has been at the forefront of change in his communities since joining the NFL. McCourty will have a special decal on his helmet for the remainder of the year.

On the Field
Since entering the league in 2010, Devin McCourty has been a standout. He’s been one of the most reliable players in the Patriots secondary for a decade. Last year, McCourty raked in 5 interceptions and 7 forced fumbles. The 2020 season was set to look different from the get-go, however, his production on the field didn’t falter. He has 2 interceptions, so far, and a touchdown from a blocked punt. He’s also forced six fumbles on the season. He is part of what makes the Patriots secondary so stingy. Jeff Howe, of The Athletic, has McCourty credited with allowing only 5 receptions on 15 targets. Also credited with breaking up 5 more pass attempts that came his way.
Off the Field
Tackle Sickle Cell
McCourty is well known for his philanthropy off the field. He, alongside twin brother Jason, host an annual charity event for their charity Tackle Sickle Cell. Tackle Sickle Cell, affiliated with Embrace Kids Foundation, aims to educate the public, increase blood donations, and raise money & awareness for the fight against sickle cell disease. To date, McCourty has raised more than $2 million dollars for Tackle Sickle Cell.
Chromebooks for Kids
At the start of the pandemic, McCourty partnered with his hometown, the Rockland Community Foundation. His efforts were to make sure that no child falls behind in school through no fault of their own. He aimed to aid the transition to remote learning and shared the cost of $90,000 worth of Chromebooks for children who didn’t have access to computers at home in Rockland County, NY. After the new school year started with more uncertainty, McCourty followed up with an additional $50,000 donation for Chromebooks for Kids this past October.
The main objective of the Players Coalition is to make an impact on social justice and racial equality at the federal, state, and local levels of the country. McCourty holds the position of Chair of the Players Coalition Education and Economic Advancement Committee. He has sat in front of the Massachusetts state legislature and argued in favor of numerous bills. Most notably “An Act Relative to Criminal Justice Reform” and the Student Opportunity Act. He has also spent time in discussions across the NFL about racism. McCourty is also a leader within the Patriots organization in their Social Justice Fund and the Kraft Family/Patriots Player Collaborative. Which helps allocate funds to organizations fighting for equality, working to end systemic racism, and create meaningful changes in local communities.
Robert Kraft – Patriots Chairman and CEO
“We are proud of Devin’s accomplishments on the field as a New England Patriot, but even more so of his character and his contributions in the community. He has been a team leader since he first joined our team in 2010 and his hard work has helped us win three Super Bowl titles and 10 division titles. But his impact in New England extends beyond the football field, volunteering countless hours to help our community. He is consistently one of the most active players in the community and is always eager to volunteer.”
Devin McCourty – Patriots Safety
“It is a great honor to be nominated for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. I recognize the opportunity that I have to use my platform to help make an impact in the community.” “I am humbled to represent his legacy with this nomination, but it is even more important to continue the work and try to make a difference.”

I am so happy that the Patriots selected one of my favorite players of all time Devin McCourty. I’ve written about him numerous times before, always making sure to highlight all he accomplishes off the field as well as on. I hope you all join me in voting for #WPMOYChallenge McCourty every chance you get. There isn’t anyone I’d rather vote for. He makes sure to use his platform for good, showing that there’s always something good even when you wouldn’t think to look for the positives.
McCourty is heavily involved in many charities. This year he has decided to support the RCF and Chromebooks for Kids initiative.
Each of the nominees will receive a $40,000 donation to a charity of their choosing. The winning player of the Walter Payton NFL Man on the Year will receive a $250,000 donation in their name to a charity of their choosing. The player whose hashtag was used the most between December 10, 2020 and January 17, 2021 will receive an additional $25,000 dollar donation to their desired charity. The second and third-place finishers will receive an additional donation of $10,000 and $5,000, respectively.
How to Vote
Use the hashtag #WPMOYChallenge followed by McCourty on Twitter. This year, the NFL is adding another incentive for fans to vote via social media. Every Monday, Nationwide will ask fans to respond and one lucky winner will receive a $100 gift card to the NFL Shop and a $2,500 donation to their nominee’s charity.
