Couch Guy Reviews: Deadpool 2

Deadpool 2 is the newest superhero movie from 20th Century Fox. It is the sequel to 2016’s Deadpool and is the 11th film in the X-Men franchise. It is directed by David Leitch and stars Ryan Reynolds, Josh Brolin, Zazie Beetz, T.J. Miller, Julian Dennison, Brianna Hildebrand, Stefan Kapicic, and Morena Baccarin. This is one of the most anticipated movies of the year so let’s review it.

When the original Deadpool came out, it was truly a groundbreaking film. It was the 1st “main stream” superhero movie with an R rating and it delivered on every level. It was hilarious, it was bloody, and it was just different. So expectations were through the roof for its sequel. So what did I think of Deadpool 2? It was good but not great. I had a fun with the movie but it is nowhere near the level of the original film.

Starting off with what I liked, all of the casting/acting was excellent. Ryan Reynolds is pretty much perfect again as Wade Wilson as he embodies everything that makes Deadpool great. But this movie is about the new cast. I am glad to say that both Josh Brolin as Cable and Zazie Beetz as Domino were fantastic additions. Brolin in particular does a great job of playing the straight man next to Reynolds comedian. Deadpool and Cable have one of the best bromances in all of comics and that relationship got off to a great start in this movie. On a separate note, Josh Brolin is pretty much the King of nerd culture right now. In a matter of weeks, he has played the time traveling mutant Cable and of course the Mad Titan Thanos.

But I did have a few problems movie. First off, it was sad to see Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Colossus take a back seat in this one. There great when they showed up, but they don’t have the same presence like they did in the first. I also thought the humor didn’t land as well. T.J. Miller as Weasel in particular didn’t land like he did in the 1st. I also thought some of the gags went on a bit too long. Don’t get me wrong, the humor was great but it was nowhere near as good as the 1st. I also didn’t like how much X-Force was shoved down our throats. I get they are trying to set up the future of the franchise but it could have been done better.

Josh Brolin as Cable

In conclusion, Deadpool 2 is very similar to Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 2. While it is a good movie and a worthy sequel, it is not as good as the original. But as long as Ryan Reynolds is Deadpool, I will keep watching these movies.

Rating: B/85%
