Couch Guy Reviews: Ant-Man and the Wasp
Ant-Man and the Wasp is the newest superhero movie and the 20th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is directed by Peyton Reed and stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Pena, Walton Goggins, Hannah John-Kamen, Michelle Pfieffer, Laurence Fishburne, and Michael Douglas. Like all of the MCU films, this is also getting great reviews so let’s dig into it.
So once again, Marvel has another winner on their hands. While Ant-Man and the Wasp is not as good as 2015’s Ant-Man, I still had a great time at the movies. Starting with the positives, its begins with said Ant-Man and said Wasp. Paul Rudd is perfect as everyman Scott Lang whose just trying to be a good father. The MCU has made Lang one of the more relatable superheroes and Rudd pulls that off perfectly. Evangeline Lilly as Hope van Dyne is also great in her 2nd outing as well. With this being the 1st time that we see the Wasp in the MCU, there was a lot of pressure to make her work. Lucky for us, Wasp is great and has some of the best action scenes in the film.
Other positives also include the action set pieces and the comedy as well. Michael Pena, like in the 1st, has another incredible rant and it was laugh out loud funny. But no movie is perfect so here are some of my complaints. To start off, Marvel has been on a hot streak with their villains of late. Killmonger as amazing in Black Panther and then Thanos was taken to a whole nother level in Avengers: Infinity War. But Ghost, played by Hannah John-Kamen, was not a good villain. They tried to humanize her and you just don’t buy it like you did with Killmonger and Thanos. Walton Goggins also plays another villain in the movie and he didn’t really work either. This leads me to my other complaint in that too much was going on in this movie. Goggins crime’s dealer and Ghost have nothing to do with one another and it creates to many plot points for Ant-Man and Wasp to overcome. It made the ending too chaotic, at least for me.
In conclusion, while Ant-Man and the Wasp isn’t as good as the original, it is still a really fun time at the movies. Rudd and Lilly are stellar together and I hope to see them in the MCU for a long time to come. There are two post-credits scenes. The 1st one is VERY IMPORTANT while the 2nd you can totally skip.
