College Football Week 3 Safe Bets
Week 3 of college football lacks the marquee matchups that were presented in week 2, but don’t let that fool you, there’s going to be plenty of action. This week has no top 25 matchups. The last time that happened? It was 2017 and there were tons of ranked teams losing. So where do you put your money in a week of perceived certainty?
Florida State at Virginia(-7.5)
Florida State will get this ship turned around. Eventually. It definitely won’t be this week. Virginia quarterback Bryce Perkins is one the best quarterbacks you’ve haven’t heard of, and Virginia has ACC championship game aspirations this season. Florida State is coming off a one point win vs. UL Monroe…in overtime… because ULM missed a PAT. FSU has given Perkins some bulletin board material this week, saying how they can control him. I fully expect there to be a capacity stadium with a night kickoff, and the crowd could be the difference in a one score and two-score game.
Virginia covers
TCU(-2.5) at Purdue
The biggest thing to know about this game is TCU is coming off an early season bye week. That means Gary Patterson has had an extra week to figure out how to shut down Rondale Moore. Will Moore be shut down? Probably not completely, he’s just too electric. What will happen is that TCU is going to make Purdue beat them on the ground. Purdue quarterback Elijah Sindelar was dinged up last week and has been going through the concussion protocol. The team expects him to play, but it’s certainly something to be aware of.
TCU covers
Hawaii at Washington-Over/under 59
Washington saw its playoff chances take a major blow last week in a loss to Cal. I expect Chris Peterson’s team to come out angry and on fire. Hawaii is an interesting team. They’ve beaten two PAC 12 teams this year, albeit Oregon State and Arizona, and they’ve done so by putting up points. This Washington defense is much better than the ones Hawaii has faced but they’re still likely to get their points. Washington should drop at least 40 points on their own, and Hawaii quarterback Cole Mcdonald will make enough plays for Hawaii to score 20+.
