In uncertain times, it’s nice to see that NHL players are stepping up to help out. Thousands of workers have been left without a guaranteed paycheck thanks to the closing of arenas everywhere. There are many NHL team owners who also own the arenas who have pledged to pay those employees throughout this pandemic. The only team holding out being Boston and the Garden.
This bump is thanks in part to the players who heard that arena workers were not going to have an income. Sergei Bobrovsky donated $100,000 to the workers of BB&T Arena. Some teams have better plans than others. But, the most vulnerable workers in the sport are taken care of for now.
That is, again, except for Boston. As a proud New Englander, this is embarrassing. We banded together after the Marathon bombings, coming together as Boston Strong, being champions for doing the right thing. Apparently, though, Deleware North, the company that owns the TD Garden, has not gotten the memo.
Despite the corporation’s apathy, the NHL’s favorite rat, Brad Marchand, has been promoting a GoFundMe to benefit the Boston workers who would be affected by DN’s inaction. So far the campaign has raised $36,000. Personally, I think Boston can do better, but this exceeds all expectations at this point for the Garden to actually come up with a payment plan.
Also taking initiative in public service, Braden Holtby donated 25,000 meals to the Capital One Arena Food Bank with his wife Brandi. They are looking for fans to help them double that number.
It’s depressing without hockey to watch on TV, but it’s comforting to know that there are good people in the League looking out for everyone involved.
Some other good news around the NHL:
- TJ Oshie (WAS) and his wife Lauren welcomed their third child (their first son), Campbell, to the family on Monday.
- Nick Jensen (WAS) and his wife Jenner welcomed their first child Lorenzo on Tuesday.
- The two Washington babies met for the first time in the hospital for a photo-op. (Wicked cute.)
- Dylan Larkin (DET) welcomed new puppy Ellie into his family.
- Tom Wilson (WAS) and his girlfriend, Canadian pro volleyball player, Taylor Pischke, added new puppy Halle to their family.
