Carles Gil: the case for MLS MVP

It is no secret that the New England Revolution are having a sensational season. As of September 28th, the Revs are sitting atop the Eastern Conference and the league. New England’s 62 points are 14 more than any other team has accumulated at this point in the season.

The Revs have won four of their last five games. Their recent 3-2 win in Chicago punched their ticket to the 2021 MLS Cup Playoffs. Part of the Revolution’s success in 2021 is down to Bruce Arena’s holistic approach. Arena has done a tremendous job of strengthening the roster and getting the best out of his players since being hired in 2019.

Still, you cannot deny the individual talent on the Revolution roster. Leading the way in that department is captain Carles Gil. Despite missing all of August with an injury, Gil has been simply sensational for the Revs in 2021.

Gil is one of the most gifted creative players to ever don the Revolution uniform, a fact he has demonstrated time and time again over the course of the season. Gil’s tremendous play has garnered him plenty of attention. Back at the beginning of September, MLS writer J. Sam Jones named Gil as the leading candidate in the MLS MVP Power Rankings.

Without further ado, let’s take a look at some of the statistics that bolster Carles Gil’s case for MLS MVP.

The Attacking Metrics of Carles Gil

The first number that jumps out about Carles Gil is his league leading 16 assists. That number gives him a five assist buffer on both Julian Gressel and Djordje Mihailovic, who are tied for second with 11 assists each.

In terms of creativity, Carles Gil is second to none in MLS. The Spaniard leads the league in both shot-creating actions and goal-creating actions. He has the most shot-creating actions in the league from both live-ball passes and dead-ball passes.

Gil leads the league with 75 successful crosses. His 94 key passes give him 26 more than the player in second place. The 28-year-old midfielder leads the league in progressive passes and completed passes into the 18-yard box.

If you need a player to create chances and scoring opportunities for your team, there is simply nobody better in MLS than Carles Gil. The fact that Gil leads the league in so many playmaking categories despite missing a month of the season is remarkable.

Although Gil has primarily made his mark as the setup man this season, he can also put the ball in the back of the net when called upon. Case in point, his stoppage time winner against Chicago to clinch a playoff berth.

Final Thoughts

Carles Gil has established himself as a cult hero among Revolution fans, so it is great to see him getting the league-wide recognition that he deserves.

Gil’s stats reflect how important he is to the team, and so do his player ratings. According to FotMob, Gil has been the best player in the league with a rating of 8.19. Player ratings are certainly an inexact science, but it is still very impressive that Gil is the only MLS player who has a cumulative rating over eight. The star midfielder has also received 10 FotMob player of the match awards, more than any other player in the league.

If Gil were to take home the 2021 Landon Donovan MVP Award, he would be the first Revs player to do so since Taylor Twellman in 2005.

There are many great players in MLS, but the stats do not lie. Carles Gil has been an incredible difference maker for the Revolution this season. He more than deserves MVP honors for his efforts.
