Buy or Sell: Red Sox Alex Verdugo Has a Big Night Against the Yankees on Sunday Night?

By now you should have heard about the embarrassing situation at Yankee Stadium on Saturday night. When Red Sox left fielder Alex Verdugo was hit in the back by a baseball that was hurled from the stands.

In the bottom of the sixth inning with the rain pouring down on the field, a fan decided to disrupt play and throw the ball at Verdguo.

Subsequently, the Red Sox outfielder took issue with the incident and got into a shouting match with the fans.

Jarren Duran would come running over from center field to try and calm down Verdugo. Unfortunately, Verdugo continued to jaw with the fans while umpires and security we’re trying to get control.

Red Sox skipper Alex Cora would remove his players from the field. With the help of the fans, security was able to locate the ignoramus involved and removed him from the ballpark.

Aftermath Following the Game

According to Brendan Kuty of NJ.com, the fan who was accused of throwing the ball at Verdugo was not arrested.

Following the game, Verdugo spoke out against the fan and incident.

“I come to expect it when I’m out here,” Verdugo said. “The trash talking, the bringing up family members, having everybody chant, excuse my language, ‘F— Verdugo’ and all these things, I’m used to that. I don’t care. That’s cool with me.”

The series finale from Yankee Stadium is on Sunday night. Yankees will send Jameson Taillon to the mound to face off against Boston.

Taillon allowed two runs on three hits and two walks over six innings in Sunday’s loss to the Astros.

It should be expected that Verdugo will get booed hard from the home crowd during his at-bats.

Verdugo has three career at-bats against Taillon on his career. The left-handed hitter has a .667 career average against the Yankees hurler.

The 25-year-old has struggled over the last month hitting .233 with no home runs and five RBIs. Saturday night’s incident could have sparked a fire inside Verdugo and he snaps out of his slump.

It would be justice served if Verdugo takes a Taillon fastball into the upper deck seats. Unquestionably  Verdugo would become the biggest villain of the new rivalry.

Absolutely nothing would be better than Verdugo having a career game against New York on Sunday. He can extract revenge on Sunday leading the Red Sox to victory.

I’m buying Verdugo. Rivalry back on.
