Buffalo Resigns Casey Mittelstadt
The Buffalo Sabres resigned one of their core players today. They reached an agreement with forward Casey Mittelstadt on a 3 year, $2.5 million contract. Mittelstadt, 22 years old, is coming off his best season as a Sabre. After former head coach Ralph Krueger got fired, Mittelstadt was one of Buffalo’s best players towards the end of last season under current head coach Don Granato.

Casey really thrived under Granato and I’m really excited to see what he does going forward. Buffalo selected Mittelstadt 8th overall in the 2017 NHL Draft and hasn’t lived up to the hype until Granato came along. According to NHL.com, Mittelstadt had 10 goals and 12 assists in 41 games played last season. Buffalo didn’t sign any big name free agents for a couple of reasons. First, I don’t expect them to be playoff contenders this year. Second, general manager Kevyn Adams says he wanted the younger players like Mittelstadt to get more playing time so they can get more experience.
Final Thoughts on Casey Mittelstadt
So what does this mean for the Sabres and Casey Mittelstadt going forward? Well for the Sabres, they have one of their core players locked up going forward. I do think Mittelstadt is a good player, he just hasn’t shown what he really has because of poor management previously. As for Casey, this is his time to shine. It’s somewhat a fresh start for him. He has a new system that works for him and hopefully he can produce with the talent around him because this team does have talent, it just hasn’t been used properly.
