Bruins Prospects Challenge and Training Camp

The Bruins prospects attended the annual Bruins Prospect Challenge tournament last weekend in Buffalo, and many are now attending Bruins training camp this week. Here are a few notes on prospects that stood out from the tournament last weekend:

Jack Ahcan

This kid is something else. The poise he has with the puck is very impressive for an undrafted rookie. I would go as far as to say his skating ability is NHL caliber. The way he walked the blue line on the powerplay over the weekend, I couldn’t help but make the comparison to former Bruin Torey Krug (even ignoring the size comparison).

Kyle Keyser

The forgotten goaltender prospect behind Jeremey Swayman and Dan Vladar. Keyser has spent much of his time in the ECHL. He was very sharp this weekend when he needed to be. Now that the log jam of goaltenders in Providence has been cleared up, Keyser is ready to take the reigns for the Providence Bruins.

Jesper Froden

Alright, I get it. An over-ager should look impressive amongst younger talent. However, at the age of 27, this is Froden’s first taste of playing on North American ice. Coming over from the Swedish Hockey League, Froden has put up impressive numbers against men. This doesn’t always translate at the NHL level (ala former Bruin Par Lindholm), but sometimes it does (ala former Bruin Carl Soderberg). It’ll be interesting to see how Froden does in Training Camp.

Lauko and Lysell

The Bruins gave us a little taste of what may be to come in the very near future. These two speedsters spent a lot of time both 5-on-5 as well as on the power play together. In the first game they were centered by both Samuel Asselin and Brett Harrison. A lot of speed and creativity anchoring the first line for the Bruins prospects over the weekend.

Don Sweeney reported that Lysell will in fact be joining the Vancouver Giants of the WHL and not the Providence Bruins this season. Although he may join on at the end of his junior season depending on when it ends and how far the P Bruins go. As for Lauko, I had mentioned before that he may push for a spot. It’ll be tough though with the log jam of left-handed wingers this Bruins team has. Nothing wrong with internal competition, though.
