Bruins Prospect Watch: Forward Fabian Lysell of Sweden

With the 21st overall pick in the 2021 entry draft this summer, the Bruins selected dynamic forward Fabian Lysell out of Sweden. However, Lysell was projected to be drafted higher. Names such as Bob MacKenzie of TSN, Mike Morreale of NHL.com and many others projected Lysell as a top 15 selection. Former Bruin and now Director of European scouting P.J. Axelsson saw Lysell in action many times these past few seasons. Axelsson himself started and ended his career with Frolunda. Lysell spent two seasons with Vastra Frolunda Jr. team of the Swedish Jr. league before moving up to Lulea HF of the Swedish Hockey League.

Lysell’s move from Jr. to SHL in Sweden

Almost immediately after Lysell was taken by the Bruins with the 21st pick in the 2021 Entry draft, rumors began to fly around social media. The description “character issues” took flight with little context as to why. We’ve seen this before and it often has a wide spectrum of meaning. For Lysell, it was reportedly regarding the move from his Jr. team to the Swedish Pro league. Lysell requested the trade and the move itself left a sour taste in some people’s mouths. He was deemed by some to be arrogant and over-confident. However, for Lysell, it was a choice he felt was right for his career. During his one season with Lulea HF, he played limited bottom role minutes as a 17-year-old. All while playing against grown men.

Lysell future and the Bruins

The Bruins wasted no time as they signed Lysell to a three-year entry-level contract. This means he would be eligible to join the Boston Bruins. But more likely he would begin his North American hockey career with the AHL Providence Bruins. Because he is coming from Europe and not the Canadian Hockey League (CHL), he is eligible to play in the AHL. Lysell would be the first 18-year-old to join the P-Bruins since Bruins star forward David Pastrnak did so back in 2014-2015.

We’ve seen this before with Don Sweeney and his group. They like to get their prospects acclimated to the ice and style of hockey that North America is accustom to. However, a report came out recently that Lysell may opt to play for the Vancouver Giants of the WHL instead. This would pin Lysell against kids his age and would also acclimate him to North American hockey.
