Bruins Head Coach Bruce Cassidy to Coach Team Canada in 2022 Olympics

Hockey Canada announced this morning the coaching staff for Team Canadta in the 2022 Beijing Olympics. Boston Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy is set to be an assistant coach for Team Canada. Cassidy will assist Team Canada’s head coach Jon Cooper of the Tampa Bay Lightning. The other assistant coaches include Vegas’ head coach Peter DeBoer and New York’s Barry Trotz.

The Ottawa native has mentioned the possibility of coaching for an Olympic hockey team before. In March, Cassidy, who has dual citizenship in the United States and Canada, said that he’d love to be behind a bench in Beijing. “I think it would be an honor to coach in the Olympics. For Canada, obviously, but if it meant being on the US side, I would certainly do it.”

Starting the Job

Cassidy started in the Bruins franchise in 2008 where he was an assistant coach under Rob Murray in Providence. He was promoted to head coach of the Providence Bruins for the 2011-12 season, where he stayed until becoming a Boston assistant coach in 2016. Cassidy finished his Providence career with a record of 207-128-45. Cassidy rose to the top in 2017 after replacing former Bruins head coach Claude Julien midseason. A great promotion after one year of assistant coaching in Boston. Following the coaching change, the Bruins closed out the 2016-17 season with a record of 18-8-1.

Impressive Accolades

Since taking over the head coaching job, the Cassidy-led Bruins have an impressive 194-82-41 record in 5 seasons with Boston. The Bruins have made the playoffs in each season with Cassidy behind the bench. He has been awarded the Jack Adams Award, the NHL’s coach of the year, after the COVID-shortened 2019-20 season. In the same season, after going 44-14-12 for an even 100 points, Cassidy and the Bruins also were awarded the President’s Trophy, given to the leader in points during the regular season.

A National Honor

While it is unclear whether or not any NHL players will also be heading to China, it is always an honor to get to represent your country in the Olympics, either as an athlete or a coach. This will mark Cassidy’s international coaching debut as he stands behind Team Canada in February. While my allegiance will always lie with Team USA, wishing the best of luck to Bruce Cassidy and Team Canada in the 2022 Beijing Olympics.

Congratulations, Coach, a well-deserved honor.
