Brandon Walter is a prospect to keep an eye on

Over the last few years, the Red Sox farm system has been on the rise. One player who has flown under the radar is Brandon Walter. The Delaware product was selected by Boston in the 26th round of the 2019 MLB draft. Since joining the Red Sox, he has appeared in 38 games in the minors. In 2021 he had his best season yet and showed why the future is bright in Boston.

Walter posted a 2.92 ERA in 25 games pitching out of the rotation and the bullpen. The Red Sox 15th best prospect held opponents to a .199 batting average and only allowed six home runs. Regardless of his role, Walter excelled when he was on the mound while throwing a career high 89.1 innings. Despite having an unexpected year off in 2020 due to COVID, Walter picked up where he left off in 2019.

While splitting time between two levels, the 25-year-old struck out 132 batters. Due to an uptick in velocity, Walter became harder to hit. Despite an increased workload, the time Walter put in during the COVID shutdown proved key to his success. At the end of the 2021 campaign, he was named the Red Sox Minor League pitcher of the year.

As the 2019 draftee joined unique company, he appeared in more than 13 games for the first time in his professional career. While he did post a 6.00 ERA in July, he bounced back and was stellar down the stretch. He allowed more than two runs once in the last two months of the season while striking out 53 batters. As the innings piled up, his consistency improved.

What to expect from Walter next season

Although the 2022 season is full of uncertainty, Walter has a bright future. His fastball now tops out in the high nineties, and his slider has improved. During his brief time in the Red Sox system, he has also displayed a solid changeup. The New Castle native has started to set himself apart in an organization full of talent.

When baseball does resume, Walter will be looking to prove that he can get advanced hitters out. He isn’t expected to make his MLB debut until 2023 and will most likely start next season in Salem. If he can build on his success, he could have a bright future in Boston.
