Who Should the Boston Red Sox Target at the Deadline?

With less than a month to go until the Trade Deadline, President of Baseball Operations, Chaim Bloom, said in a press conference earlier this past week, that he would rather not stay put when it comes to the Trade Deadline. Now, this should be music to Red Sox fan’s ears as it means that Bloom is all in on this run that the Red Sox are making.

Now, hypothetically they are already getting the biggest trade acquisition of the season, and that is Chris Sale returning from Tommy John. There are other needs that could be addressed as well, though.

So, what can the Red Sox upgrade at the Trade Deadline? Who are some possible names?

Here are two position needs and some names to look out for in the coming weeks… Let’s dive in!

BIGGEST RED SOX TRADE DEADLINE NEED: BULLPEN

This is probably Bloom’s biggest target at the trade deadline for the Red Sox. They need a guy that can help you get through games so you don’t burn out your closer or other key pitchers! Saturday night against Oakland is one example. In the 12th inning, reliever Matt Andriese came in to close out a two-run lead, which would go by the wayside as the Athletics would walk it off with no outs being recorded.

Now, this is no knock against Andriese. BUT, not much you could have done given the situation you were in at the moment.

You can never have too much depth in your bullpen, and with the most likely addition in august of Garrett Richards when Chris Sale comes back, you’ll want a spare arm just in case.

POSSIBLE TARGETS: Richard Rodriguez (Pirates), Daniel Bard (Rockies), Taylor Rogers (Twins), Ian Kennedy (Rangers), Craig Kimbrel (Cubs)

SECOND BIGGEST TRADE DEADLINE NEED: FIRST BASE

It is no secret that the infield has been one of the most interesting positions for this Red Sox team this year. The biggest question of the infield has been first base. The position has seen Bobby Dalbec, Danny Santana, Marwin Gonzalez, and some Michael Chavis. All have been part of the revolving door that is the first base position. Needless to say, the position has not produced like it was expected, although Dalbec has come to life a little in recent weeks. Overall, though, there is still a hole in the lineup when it comes to its bat.

We have seen more of Marwin Gonzalez playing some of his other positions, which is the preferred situation. And Danny Santana is well, Danny Santana… While Michael Chavis is a Wild Card at this point. So, while it is not a major need, you would still like to see Bloom upgrade at the platoon that is first base

POSSIBLE TARGETS: Garrett Cooper (Marlins), Jesus Aguilar (Marlins), CJ Cron (Rockies), Colin Moran (Pirates)

HONORABLE MENTION: Leadoff Hitter

It is not a massive need–especially with Kike Hernandez heating up and the anticipation for Jarren Duran down in Triple-A–but it is something that should be thought of at least getting closer to the trade deadline.

Probably one of the biggest downsides to the lineup is the leadoff spot. Of course, this was before the start of Kike Hernandez’s power surge.

POSSIBLE TARGETS: Robbie Grossman (Tigers), Adam Frazier (Pirates)

ABSOLUTE PIPE DREAM: Trea Turner (Nationals)
